Mrs. Willard Palmer, 19, died at 5 a.m. at a local hospital, while her five-months-old child, Delois, died at 10 o'clock in another hospital last night. Mrs. B. L. King was the other victim; she was killed instantly when the sedan was struck by the train. Both Mrs. Palmer and her baby were in critical condition when brought to Roanoke following the tragedy. Little hope was held for their recovery. The accident, the second to occur at grade crossings near Salem during the last two months, thus has brought death to three person while three others were injured. Four women and two children occupied the sedan. Mrs. Russell Palmer, daughter of Mrs. King, was driving and escaped with slight injury. Mrs. Promise Pruett, another of the occupants, likewise escaped with only lacerations and bruises and & child of Mrs. Russell Palmer was only slightly injured. Mrs. Palmer, the driver, has stated that she did not hear or see the Virginian electric locomotive as it approached the crossing. The locomotive engineer has said that he did not notice the sedan until it was well the tracks. As far as been reported, the county coroner has not rendered a verdict on the accident. All of the occupants of the sedan resided in Roanoke county. When overtaken by accident, they were returning home from a shopping tour at Salem. on March 8, 1930.4 She died on March 8, 1930 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 19; Died along with her mother and infant daughter in an auto-train collision.1

Those surviving to honor her memory include her brother, Cullen Lawrence, Galax, Va. and Clifton Lawrence, Roanoke, Va. Several nieces and nephews also survive along with two very special friends, Cheryl Sheets and Mary Day. Mildred graduated from Galax High School and began her working career with Inter-Mountain Telephone Company where she spent seven years before moving to Washington, DC during World War II. In Washington, Mildred enjoyed a unique and special career, serving her country as a telephone operator in the White House, where she worked under four United States Presidents -Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Gerald Ford. Upon retiring from the White House, she moved to Roanoke. Strong in her faith, Mildred was a long-time member of North Roanoke Baptist Church, and was a charter member of Lions Club Crossroads and NARFE#111. She cherished holidays, spending time with neighbors past and present, helping others, and she loved doing dinner with friends and family. While she was a resident of Roanoke for many years, she loved going back home to Galax, Va. where she spent most of her youth. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2014 and the celebration service will be on Friday, April 11, 2014 at noon at Oakey's North Chapel with Dr. Darryl G.
