Allison Gordon Galt was buried at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Dallas, Dallas Co., Texas.2 He was born on September 1, 1913 at Clarksburg, Harrison Co., West Virginia. He married Virginia Kathleen Underwood, daughter of Archibald Ray "Archie" Underwood and Roxie Eugene Poff, on June 26, 1935 at Excelsior, McDowell Co., West Virginia.1,2,3 Allison Gordon Galt died on October 24, 1994 at Dallas, Dallas Co., Texas, at age 81.4,2 He Services for Dallas independent oilman and political supporter A. Gordon Galt will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Park Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Mr. Galt died at his Dallas home Monday. He was 81. Mr. Galt founded Western Gulf Oil and Gas Inc. in Dallas and operated it for almost 50 years. With the success of his oil company, Mr. Galt became active in politics, first backing conservative Democrats and then Republicans as the party emerged in Texas, said his daughter, Allison Galt Hall of Dallas. His Republican backing created a stir 30 years ago, when - as a Democratic precinct chairman in Dallas County - he supported George Bush in his race against U.S. Sen. Ralph Yarborough. "They got angry at him, and he had to change parties," Mrs. Hall said. A native of Clarksburg, W.Va., Mr. Galt came to Dallas in 1939 and soon founded Pan American Engineering Co., an import-export company specializing in buying and selling railroad locomotives to Mexico. Pan American's business was key to establishing Dallas business relations with the Mexican government during the early 1940s, Mrs. Hall said. "It wasn't too long ago the Mexican government needed a locomotive, and he found them one," she said. In 1945, Mr. Galt founded Western Gulf Oil and Gas, and he spent the next 49 years as an independent oilman. "He didn't have any help from anybody. He was a self-made man," Mrs. Hall said. During the '60s, Mr. Galt started Empire Energy, a coal operation in Craig, Colo. He belonged to the Northwood Country Club, where he was an active tennis player. A financial supporter of Southern Methodist University, Mr. Galt's memberships included the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce, the Dallas Petroleum Club, the Dallas Club, the Energy Club of Dallas and the Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners. In addition to his daughter, Mr. Galt is survived by his wife, Kathleen Underwood Galt; a second daughter, Barbara Galt Meadows; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to Zale Lipshy University Hospital, in care of Dr. Gary Reed, 5151 Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas, Texas 75235. on October 26, 1994.2
