Essie Alice Bartel Essie Bartel Long, 84, of Salem, passed away quietly at her home with her "boys" by her side and other family members on Tuesday, January 24, 2017. Essie was preceded in her passing by her parents, W. Lawrence and Laura Bartel of Floyd; husband , the "love of her life", Marion "Doc" Long; and her special friend and daughter-in-law, Carol "Bett" Long. Left to cherish her memory are her "boys", Geary Long of Floyd and Tim Long of Salem; twin sister, Tressie Thornton and husband, James, of Floyd; sister, Freeda Sowers of Floyd; sister-in-law, Thelma Long of Roanoke; grandchildren, Mary Shaver and husband, Richard, of Christiansburg, Jonathan Long of Floyd, Megan Long of Salem, and Laura Long of Herndon; two great-grandchildren, Skylar and Landon Shaver; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Essie was a sixty plus year member of the West Salem Church of Christ, where she had many friendships that she valued deeply. She was a long time employee of the Maid Bess Corp., but her final years were spent as a caregiver, first to her mother, then her husband, and finally her daughter-in-law. Essie, while not a gourmet cook always had everyone wanting to eat her meals, simple country food prepared with her flair, but more importantly her love of watching other's enjoy her meals. She was always the last to eat, making sure that everyone else got all they wanted. It was said Essie's table was the quietest table, as no one wanted to talk, just enjoy her home cooked food and not waste any time by talking. The family would like to extend a special thanks to her caregivers, Sarah Banks, Nae Banks, Julie Martin, Sydney Richie, and the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice, because their dedication allowed Mom to be in her home, eating good food at her kitchen table. A committal will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem.7 She was buried at Sherwood Burial Park, 1045 Lynchburg Turnpike, Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.7 She was born on August 20, 1932 at Floyd Co., Virginia.8,1 As of February 4, 1955,her married name was Long.1 She married Marion Dillon Long on February 4, 1955 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.2,1,4,6,7,9 Essie Alice Bartel died on January 24, 2017 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 84.7
