Bowne and Helen Dana, in 1896 at Brooklyn, New York.5,4 Harrison Brooks Smith died on October 18, 1942 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia, at age 76.1,4 He Funeral services for Harrison Brooks Smith, 76, prominent attorney, banker, churchman and musician who died early Sunday at his home, "Bougemont," in South Hills, after a year's illness, will be conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Kanawha Presbyterian church. Rev. Warren S. Stone will officiate and burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. The family has requested that flowers be omitted. Pallbearers will be Isaac Noyes Smith, E. Dana. Smith, Fred M. Staunton, David N. Gittinan, Henry B. Lewis and Robert S. Spilman, Sr. Mr. Smith succumbed to a complication of illnesses resulting from an attack of influenza and pneumonia. His health became impaired in 1939 when he suffered a paralytic stroke from which he only partially recovered. Mr. Smith was the fifth of his family, in direct descent, engaged in law practice. Col. Benjamin H. Smith, his grandfather, was one of the prominent lawyers of his generation and his father, Isaac Noyes Smith, as a senior member of the firm of Smith and Knight, until his death in 1882, was one of the most distinguished lawyers in West Virginia. Harrison Brooks Smith was born in Charleston, Sept. 7, 1866. His mother was Caroline Quarrier Smith. He attended public schools, Kanawha military school, Washington and Lee university and Princeton university, from which he was graduated in 1886 with an A. B. degree. He began the study of law at the University of Virginia. This course was interrupted by illness but later he studied law in the office of his uncle, William A. Quarrier of Charleston, and was admitted to the bar in 1889. Starting practice alone, he soon became a member of the firm of Adams and Smith. Later, he was associated with the legal firm of Couch, Flournoy & Smith. Mr. Couch, withdrew and the firm became known as Flourney, Price and Smith. This firm was succeeded by Price, Smith, Spilman & Clay which in turn became Price, Smith & Spilman upon the death of Buckner Clay. Mr. Smith was the senior partner at the time of his death. Mr. Smith had served as president of the Kanawha Banking and Trust company of which he was one of the founders, since 1929. He was president of the West Virginia Coal company and was associated with several other business enterprises. He organized the old Charleston trust company and served as president of the George Washington Life Insurance company, which he founded in 1906, until 1934.
