Johnson, a Fulbright scholar who pioneered studies in art conservation. Mr. Johnson, who had been seriously ill with diabetes for several years, died Sept. 3 at his home in Santa Monica, Calif. He was the head conservator of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He was 52. A Hopewell native, Mr. Johnson graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1960 and went on to become recognized as a leading artist, conservator and educator. Mr. Johnson was the first graduate of the art conservation program at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts and trained with Italy's foremost art conservator, Leonetto Tintori. He also studied in Brussels, Belgium, and at the University of Ghent. After his initial training, Mr. Johnson became conservator of U.S. paintings at the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington and also operated a private art conservation practice that cared for some of the nation's finest works, including those at collections at Dumbarton Oaks and the National Portrait Gallery. In 1967, he became head conservator at the Los Angeles museum and established there the first conservation laboratory west of the Mississippi River. He lectured at numerous universities and was an adviser to many art collectors across the country. In 1989, he completed a film project, "The Divine Mind," a film of Leonardo da Vinci's drawings. Mr. Johnson also established a private corporation, Artcare Inc., and maintained an active role in numerous disciplines, including sculpting, pottery-making, printmaking, drafting, watercolor and oil painting. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Christine Wilson Johnson; a son, Mark Johnson; and a daughter, Elena Johnson, both of Santa Monica, Calif; a brother, Robert A. Johnson of Vienna; and, a sister, Kathrine J. McLean of Lynchburg. Also surviving are his parents, Mary Lee and C.E. Johnson of Hopewell. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. at the J.T. Morriss Funeral Home in Hopewell. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association. on September 11, 1990.5
