Elinor was a native of Bristol, TN, and was a daughter of the late Rev. John E. Bowery and Ora Osborne Bowery Brown. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred Wysor (Wimpy/Champ) Gray, Jr; two brothers, Rev. John E. Bowery Jr., infant, Charles Bowery; brothers-in-law, Rev. William Haynes Watson, Thomas L. Gray and Cary Lewis Gray; sisters-in-law, Catherine Gray Briscoe and Mary S. Gray. Elinor graduated from Bristol Tennessee High School in 1942 and was married in 1943. She accompanied her husband to New York, NY where she worked in a defense factory while her husband, Wimpy, served in the Navy/ U.S. Merchant Marines during WWII. They returned to Bristol, TN after the war and lived there most of their lives. She became a Stanley Home Products dealer in 1946 and quickly became a top dealer with the help and support of her husband and children. She was promoted to unit sales leader and then branch manager and is so often remembered as the “Stanley Lady”. She was also an active member of Beaverview Baptist Church. Elinor is survived by her children, sons Wilfred W. Gray III and wife, Wendy, Summerfield, NC, William Pete Grubbs and wife, Diana, Bluff City, TN; daughters, Reveley Gray McGrady and husband, Carl, Bristol, TN, and Rebecca Gray Cox and husband, Thomas, St. Petersburg, FL; sister, Martha Nell Watson, Bristol, TN; sisters-in-law Peggy Mitchell Bowery, Bristol, TN and Peggy Gray Webster, Thaxton, VA; grandchildren John Wysor Gray and partner, Misty Jones, Knoxville, TN, Luke Byron Gray and partner, Buffy Freeman, Knoxville, TN, Benjamin Rock Daniels and wife, Heather, Lexington, KY, Catherine Bowery Cox Romens and husband, Matt, Tampa, FL, Byron Thomas Cox and wife, Brittany, Valrico, FL, Tracy Grubbs Taylor and husband, Mike, Bluff City, TN, and Will Isaac Grubbs IV and wife, Angie, Bluff City, TN. Honorary grandchildren, Jeremy and Joshua Matt. Great grandsons, Grayson Phillip Daniels, Bennett Michael Daniels, Lewis Cary Cox, Zachary Kiser, Christopher Kiser, Benjamin Taylor, Jeremy Taylor, Isaac Grubbs, and Elijah Grubbs. In addition to her biological children, Grandmother Ellie (or Elinor) leaves behind many other children and their families, who although not through blood, were loved, cherished and cared for like family by Elinor and her husband “Grand Daddy Champ.” You know who you are! The interment will follow the service at Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends. The family would like to express their gratitude and a special thank you to Elinor’s personal caregivers, staff of NHC of Bristol, Hospice employees and volunteers and all those who enriched her life. on August 31, 2017.2
