Robert C. Eldred of Mackeyville is Instantly Killed While Hauling Grain. Many people of this city who saw and conversed with Robert C. Eldred of Mackeyville, at the curb market Saturday morning were greatly shocked early in the evening to learn that he met a cruel death at his home in the afternoon. After returning from town Mr. Eldred began to haul his wheat from the field to the barn and while thus engaged his life was suddenly crushed out. He was standing on top of a load of wheat as the horses entered the barn when the fore part gave way and he slipped with the load down on the horses. His son LeRoy was following the load and saw his fathers dangerous position and ran through another portion of the barn to reach the horses heads in order to better help his father up, but he was just too late as his father had fallen to the ground the front wheel of the wagon passing over his head and left arm killing him instantly. His son seeing the blood gushing from his father head jumped upon a horse and went for Dr. Dumm at Mackeyville. The physicians found that Mr. Eldreds skull had been crushed by the wheel, causing instant death, his left arm broken and his neck badly bruised. The whole community was greatly shocked and grieved at the tragic death of their friend and neighbor. The deceased was a genial, benevolent, hospitable farmer and his friends were legion. He is survived by two sons, George B. Eldred of Altoona, and LeRoy, with whom he made his home, two brothers, John W., of South Sharon, William D., of Bendersville, and the following half brother and sisters: James P. Eldred, Glen Elder?, Kansas; Mrs. D.I. McNaul of this city, Mrs. W. S. Meyer and Miss Mary Eldred of Mackeyville. The funeral was held from his late home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Samuel Creighton. Interment was made at Cedar Hill cemetery. on July 22, 1904.5
