     Marie Eleanor Hall Chatham was buried at Linnwood Cemetery, McElhattan, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania.^7,8,9 She was born on March 19, 1884 at Wayne Township, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania.^2,4,8 As of November 22, 1915,her married name was Phillips.⁴ She married James Earl Quiggle Phillips on November 22, 1915 at Atlantic City, Atlantic Co., New Jersey.^4,7,5 Marie Eleanor Hall Chatham died on January 19, 1955 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at age 70.^7,8 She Mrs. Marie Chatham Phillips, 70, formerly of McElhattan, died at 12.08 p.m. yesterday at 35 N. Paxton St., Philadelphia, where she had lived in recent years with a sister, Mrs. W. Rae Bodwell. The name of Marie Chatham Phillips in eastern Clinton County is linked with that of Col. John Chatham chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, which she organized and served as first regent. The chapter bears the name of her direct ancestor. She was born in McElhattan, one of 13 children of John H. Chatham, Jr., and Barbara Gramley Chatham. She received her education at the Central State Normal School in Lock Haven, and the Pennsylvania State College, and taught school for 40 years in Clinton County. She was married to Earl Q. Phillips, who has been deceased many years. Their daughter, Mrs. Charles Frost, and two grandchildren, Mary and Jane Frost, now live in Houston, Texas. Mrs. Phillips retired from teaching seven years ago. She had been in ill health much of the time since her retirement. Survivors, in addition to Mrs. Bodwell, her daughter and two grandchildren, are two other sisters and a brother, Mrs. George T. Smith, LaJolla, Cal; Mrs. Nanette Gardner, Winter Park, Fla., and John H. Chatham, 3rd, formerly of Philadelphia, now residing in the homestead at McElhattan. She was a member of the McElhattan Church of the Lock Haven Methodist Parish. on January 20, 1955.⁷

Rae Chatham of Philadelphia. He is survived by his wife, Adelia Gates Chatham, a daughter and two sons, Mrs. Albert Bennett, Paul Gates Chatham and William Dunn Chatham; five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Local survivors include four sisters and a brother, Mrs. A. B. Gardner, Mrs. George T. Smith, Miss W. Rae Chatham, Mrs. Marie C. Phillips and John Hall Chatham. on November 11, 1947.⁷

     John Hall Chatham Jr. was buried at Linnwood Cemetery, McElhattan, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania.⁴ He was born on November 11, 1847 at Pennsylvania.^2,6 He married Barbara Jane Gramley on October 10, 1868.^1,2,10,11,12 John Hall Chatham Jr. died on April 30, 1923 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at age 75.^13,6 He John H. Chatham, of McElhattan, one of the best known residents of this section, died Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ray Badwell, of Philadelphia. Mr. Chatham had been ill for several months and been a patient at the Homeopathic hospital in West Philadelphia, being removed to his daughter's home recently when he showed signs of improvement. He was 76 years of age. Deceased was born in this city and in his early days followed the Susquehanna as a raftsman, no man being more familiar with the Susquehanna and its branches. Throughout his life he was a lover of the great outdoors and was particularly well versed in woodcraft and the habits of birds and animals. His fund of general knowledge was comprehensive and he was an authority on general history and folklore, both ancient and modern. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Alpine club, of which he was the poet, and always attended its outings. A poet of no mean ability, a number of his poems and other writings have appeared in book form. He is survived by four daughters and two sons. The body will be brought to Willlamsport on the Buffalo flyer Thursday afternoon and will be transferred to the local afternoon train at the Park Hotel station, and will be taken to tbe McElhattan Methodist church, where funeral services will be conducted by Rev. J. Leroy Cohick. on May 1, 1923.¹³ He Several hundred friends of the late John Hall Chatham, poet and naturalist, attended the ceremonies at sunset Friday in Linnwood cemetery, McElhatten, in connection with the unveiling of a large boulder by Col. Henry W. Shoemaker. The service was opened with prayer by Rev J. Leroy Cohick, after which the unveiling of the monument took place. The stone ivas covered with an American flag and at a given signal four great-grandchildren of the poet pulled the cord, letting down the flag and exposing to view the huge boulder which had been taken from the mountainside near the cabin "Fort Kittanning where the nature lover spent the most happy hours of his life. J. Herbert Walker, of Altoona, spoke, paying a high tribute to the aged nature lover and poet. A letter was read from Governor Pinchot telling of his affection for his old friend, and a letter was also read from Bruce A. Hunt of Altoona. Rev. Mr. Cohick pronounced the benediction and taps were sounded just as the sun was sinking in the west. On the boulder is a bronze plate bearing the following inscription: 1848—1923 John Hall Chatham. Poet, Naturalist, Historian "I have learned with deepest regret, the death of Mr. Chatham. My sense of personal loss is real and deep. He was not only an outdoor man but an outdoor poet whose feeling for the beauty in the wilderness was keenly felt and beautifully expressed. Many a nature lover throughout the commonwealth will mourn his loss. Gifford Pinchot" on October 27, 1923.⁴

B. Gardner of Beech Creek, who had lived with a daughter, Mrs. Alan Taylor, Mount Royal Road, Skyland, N.C., for the past ten years, died in a western North Carolina hospital Sunday after a long illness. A native of McElhattan, Mrs. Gardner was a daughter of John Hall Chatham, Jr. She was a past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star of Little Falls, N. Y., and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She belonged to the Mother Church, First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Gardner leaves two sisters, Miss Rae Chatham, Philadelphia; Mrs. George Smith, San Diego, Calif; a brother, John Hall Chatham, Oldsmar, Fla., and a number of nieces and nephews. on October 24, 1963.⁴

     Alvin Berton "Bert" Gardner was buried at Linnwood Cemetery, McElhattan, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania.^1,3 He was born on August 28, 1872 at Beech Creek, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania.^1,2,4,3 He married Nanette Blanche "Nettie" Chatham, daughter of John Hall Chatham Jr. and Barbara Jane Gramley, on October 21, 1896 at Clinton Co., Pennsylvania.^1,5,2,3 Alvin Berton "Bert" Gardner died on November 18, 1936 at McElhattan, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania, at age 64.^1,3 He Alvin Bert Gardner died this morning at the home of Mrs. Marie C. Phillips, McElhattan, after a short illness. Mr. Gardner was born at Beech Creek and for a long time was employed by the B. C. C. & S. W. Railroad. In 1900 he moved to New York where he was made engine dispatcher with headquarters at Little Falls, N.Y. In 1928 he was moved to Albany where he was made chief signalman of the Mohawk Division. When this posftion was merged with another he retired to his home in South Bay on Oneida Lake. While living in Little Falls he affiliated with the Blue Lodge F. & A. M. No. 181 and was past commander of the Little Falls Commandery K. T. No. 26. He was a member of Ziara Temple Mystic Shrine, Utica, N.Y. He is survived by his wife, Nanette Chatham Gardner and one daughter, Helen Rae Gardner. Funeral services will be held at the Chatham homestead, McElhattan, Saturday afternoon at 2:30. Burial will be made in the Linwood Cemetery. on November 19, 1936.¹

Chatham, McElhatten, For the Third Time in Two years. The grim reaper has again visited the home of John B. Chatham, at McElhatten and this time removed the wife and mother from the home circle. Mrs. Chatham passed away this morning at 7:30 o'clock after a long illness. Some years ago she was stricken with paralysis and her health was so shattered by the stroke that she never regained her strength, but became a constant sufferer. She was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Gramley of Rabersberg and was aged 59 years. This is the third time that death has visited the Chatham family in about two years. A daughter was buried about two years ago and only a month ago Miss Phebe, another daughter passed away. Mrs. Chatham is survived by her husband, two sons, Lewis C. and John H. Chatham Jr. and four daughters, Mrs. Bert Gardiner of Little Falls, N.J., Mrs. George T. Smith of Pittsburg and Rae and Marie at home. The funeral will occur from the home at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Rev. A. A. Parr of this city will conduct the service. Interment will be made at McElhatten. on March 3, 1906.³ She died on March 3, 1906 at McElhattan, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania, at age 58.^3,5

     Dr. Francis Schuyler Smith was buried at Highland Cemetery, 6th and N. Fairview Streets, Lock Haven, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania.^2,4,5 He was born on May 13, 1829 at Sylvania, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania.^4,6,5 He married Mary Ellen Chatham, daughter of Hon. James B. Chatham and Henrietta Craig DeHaas, on April 9, 1863.^1,4 Dr. Francis Schuyler Smith died on January 23, 1916 at Lock Haven, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania, at age 86.^4,5 He Dr. Francis S. Smith, a well known physician of this city, died at his home on East Water street Sunday morning shortly after 10 o'clock. He had been in failing health for some time due to old age, but was able to be about. Dr. Francis S. Smith was born at Sylvania, Bradford county, Pa., May 13, 1829, and was aged 86 years 8 months and 10 Days. His ancestry dates back to the days of the revolution. His grandfather was one of the "Green Mountain boys" who fought under Ethan Allen; he was a soldier on duty at the execution of Major Andre. His father was a veteran of the war of 1812, and Dr. Smith himself served during the Civil war as assistant surgeon of the One Hundred and Ninety-Fourth Pennsylvania regiment. Dr. Smith first came to Clinton county in 1839. He attended the common schools of that day, and also spent two years as a student at the Jersey Shore academy. He read medicine and attended lectures in the medical department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He afterward entered Hahnemann's college, at Philadelphia, and graduated from there in 1859. After his graduation he practiced for a short time in the state of Maryland, and later at Benderville, Pa. In the spring of 1865 he came to Lock Haven, where he remained until the fall of 1867, when he went to Augusta, Ill., remaining there until spring of 1873. He then returned to Lock Haven where he had since resided. For many years Dr. Smith was the only homoepathic physician in Clinton county. He served 11 years as city physician. He continued in the active practice of his profession until the advanced age of 83. Mr. Smith was married April 9, 1863, to Mary Ellen Chatham, a daughter of Hon. James Chatham, a one time Sheriff of Clinton county. To this union were born Laura K., and Cora J., both of whom with the wife, the companion of many years, preceded him to the spirit land. When a young man he obeyed the gospel under the ministry of Nathan J. Mitchell, one of the pioneer preachers of the Church of Christ. In 1865, he became a member of the Church of Christ at Lock Haven, where he retained his membership until his death. In 1875, he was elected on the board of deacons and served in this capacity until made an elder in 1900, which latter office he held at the time of his death. He was vitally interested in every department of the church work and together with his wife, left their home as a bequest to the Christian Women's Board of Missions. In his own will he set aside a parcel of bank stock for the purchase of a church parsonage for the local church. Two weeks before his death he attended services at the Church of Christ and at this service gave $500 toward the new church building. Dr. Smith was a consistant Christian gentleman. He leaves a host of warm, personal friends. Not only in his declining years but throughout his entire life he was deeply interested in the material and spiritual good of neighbors and fellow citizens. Funeral services will he conducted at his late residence on East Water street, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, by Rev. Homer C. Boblitt, pastor of the Church of Christ, Lock Haven, assisted by Rev. M. C. Frick, pastor of the Church of Christ at Mill Hall, interment will be made at Highland cemetery. on January 24, 1916.⁴

She was a retired registered nurse and a member of the Biltmore Chapter Order of Eastern Star No. 38 and the Ros-scraggan Wood Club. Surviving is her husband, Alan Alexander Taylor. No services are planned. on February 24, 1988.³
