His Social Security Number was 172-14-9914.5 Thomas Maxwell Hulings married Katherine Young.3 Thomas Maxwell Hulings was born on May 5, 1920 at Pennsylvania.4,5 He died on July 8, 1998 at DeKalb Co., Georgia, at age 78.2,5 He Thomas M. Hulings, 78, of Dunwoody was a World War II Army Air Corps bomber pilot who was lucky to make it home. The funeral for Mr. Hulings, who died Wednesday of a heart attack at his home, will be at 11:30 am today at H.M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill. The body was cremated. On Mr. Hullings' first bombine mission against German forces in Lille, France, his B-17 bomber was hit with 2,000 rounds of anti-aircraft fire on Oct. 9, 1942. Although five of his crew were wounded, Mr. Hillings managed to bring the bomber, nicknamed the Flying Fortress, back to the 92nd Bomb Group base in Bovingdon, England. The extensive damage to the plane was noted in "Ripley's Believe It or Not!", said his wife of 54 years, Katherine Hidings of Dunwoody. Mr. Hulings was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and flew missions with the 92nd, 306th and 25th bomb groups. His friend and fellow veteran Saul Kupferman of Decatur, who flew aboard a B-17 on missions against the Germans, said that his own plane was hit with 400 rounds. "They would just put patches over the holes and send them back up," he said. By the time Mr. Kupferman flew his first mission as a radio operator with the 306th Bomb Group, Mr. Hulings already had completed 25 missions with the 92nd, which was extraordinary at that point in the war. "The life expectancy of a bomber crew was six to eight missions. If you made it to 25 then, you got the Distinguished Flying Cross," said Mr. Kupferman, who later received the honor himself. Mr. Hulings flew 14 missions with the 306th Bomb Group, piloted the high-speed plywood-made Mosquito reconnaissance aircraft and ferried high-ranking generals to conferences in North Africa. He also was part of a project to resurvey all the air maps of Europe and Africa. Mr. Hulings met his wife in England during the war. Capt. Katherine Young was commanding officer of the 8th Army Air Corps Headquarters Women's Air Corps detachment in High Wycombe. Mr. Hulings was a technical salesman for the Hercules Powder Co. in Atlanta, retiring in 1985 after 23 years with the company. He flew gliders with the Middle Georgia Soaring Association and was a member of the Georgia Chapter of the 8th Air Force Historical Society. Survivors other than his wife include a daughter, Drina Rose of Dunwoody, a son, Dan Hulings of Denver; and two granddaughters. on July 11, 1998.3
