Interment be in Highland Burial Park. Brenda Ruth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Conner of Slaughter Ave., was the only fatality in this vicinity during the hazardous Labor Day weekend. She was pulled from the waters of the lake just off Rt. 58, at about 5 p.m., three hours before the lake was to close for the season. The Conner family was sitting on the bench while Brenda played with some children, no more than 10 feet from shore. The children were ducking under the water and playing so that Brenda was not missed by her friends for several minutes. She was last seen going under the water near a raft. A playmate reported her disappearance to a lifeguard but the guard's efforts to find the child were of no avail. The body was found on the opposite side of the raft after a chain of men worked their way into the water seartching the bottom. A Swicegood ambulance crew applied a resuscitator but the child was pronounced dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital. It was estimated that she had been in the water for 45 minutes. She is survived by her parents; three sisters, Faye, Mary and Martha Conner; a brother, Jerry Conner; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Wyatt of Martinsville; and her paternal grandmother, Mrs. C. L. Adkins of Petersburg. on September 5, 1957.5
