He was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, The Army Good Conduct Medal, The Korea Defense Service Medal, and Sharpshooter Badge. He was also a former Military Police officer. He continued his law enforcement after his military career in Virginia, settling in Vine Grove, KY. He was a former Vine Grove Police Officer and former Vine Grove Water Commissioner. He retired from Harper Construction at the age of 70. Other honorable titles include Kentucky Colonel General. Sam's love for NASCAR led him to help building stock cars and even winning 2 dirt track titles. He was an outstanding mechanic. He spent his life serving his country, family, and the love of law enforcement. Sam was a good man! Sam was preceded in death by his parents, his son David C. Samples and a granddaughter Amanda E. Ford. Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Rebekah Suzan Samples; daughters: Elaine (Jerry) Jones, Christy Bourgeois, Julie (Chris) Ford, Rebekah (Rick) Thompson, daughter-in-law: Melissa (Barlow) Samples; 7 grandchildren: Bobby Joe (Candace) Sanders, Patty Sue (Craig) Houchin, Scotty (Nikki) Sanders, Tara (Clay) Samples Ellis, Krista Ford, Ashley and Emily Thompson; great grandchildren: Baylee Hess, Hannah and Eli Sanders, Naomi Sanders, Keaton, Ava and Kyle Ellis and Juliet Ford; extended family , his favorite nephew Eddie Craft. Burial with military honors will follow at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, Radcliff, KY. on December 12, 2022.6

Mrs. Strausbaugh was born on March 2, 1922, in Procious W. Va., a daughter of the late Henry L. and Eliza M. (Burdette) Sams. Her and her late husband owned and operated the former Gus Farm Equipment in Seven Valleys and she was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. She is survived by a son, Fred L. Strausbaugh of Spring Grove; a granddaughter, Erin K. Strausbaugh; and great-grandson, Christian Walker. She was preceded in death by a son, Franklin L. "Frank" Strausbaugh. on April 25, 2007.2

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2005, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Pastor David Pence and Evangelist Tom Bowan officiating. Entombment will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. on September 12, 2005.2
