William Shirley Poff was buried at Fair View Cemetery, 3300 Melrose Ave. N.W., Roanoke, Virginia.3 He was born on August 9, 1898 at Virginia.2 He died on October 27, 1914 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 16.3,4 He Found Dead In Pit at West End Round House at Midnight - Evidently Lost Footing and Fell From Tender of Locomotive While Watering - No Inquest. Dead from the effect of a fracture at the base of the skull, the body of William C. Poff (actually William S. Poff) , seventeen-year-old son of W. S. Poff (actually G. C. Poff), of 104 Ninth street, N. W., was found in an engine pit at the West End round house by a fellow workman at midnight last night. No one saw the accident that resulted in young Poff's death. He was found lying in about nine inches of water in the engine pit and it waa not at first known whether he died from effect of the fall or from drowning. Thinking there might a spark of life left, the body hurriedly was removed to the hospital after it was found, but examination before removal from the ambulance showed there was no hope. Poff last was seen alive when talking with a fellow workman about 10:30. His father works at the round house and was on duty when the body of his son was found. The body was taken to Oakey's morgue where this morning it was viewed by Coroner R. Gordon Simmons. While no one saw the fall and there is no definite information as to the facts surrounding Poff's death, the coroner concluded from circumstances that it was accidental and no inquest will be held. Poff had been employed at the round house about a year and was esteemed by his associates and superiors. He was a hard worker, popular among the shopmen and his death cast a gloom over the round house forces. Funeral services will be at the Poff home at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon and interment will be made in Fairview. on October 28, 1914.4
