He was a navy veteran of both world wars and was a former commander of La Jolla American Legion Post. He was also a past master of the La Jolla Masonic lodge. He had been a real estate broker 33 years. Bennett served as a director of the Community Chest and YMCA. Active in city politics, Bennett was a member of the Board of Freeholders, which drafted the San Diego city charter and was a proponent of the district plan creating six councilmanic districts. Bennett was convicted on a felony bribery charge in 1954 during a San Diego Grand Jury investigation of alleged liquor licence mishandling and sentenced to prison. Granted immunity from further prosecution, Bennett returned from Los Padres Mens Colony at San Luis Obispo to testify in a later grand jury investigation of liquor licenses. That investigation led to the indictment of William G. Bonelli, then a member of the Board of Equalization, who is now in Mexico fighting extradition. Bennett was paroled from prison in October 1957. He lived at 4579 Rolando Blvd. at the time of his death. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Evelyn Bennett, a daughter, Mrs. Jocklyn Pasich of San Diego; and two grandsons.
