Harry Carlyle Hickson1,2,3
M, b. April 19, 1902, d. August 3, 1983
Harry Carlyle Hickson was buried at Lauderdale Memorial Park, Fort Lauderdale, Broward Co., Florida.2 He married Sarah Ruth Allison, daughter of James Whitehill Allison and Buena Vista Davis.1 Harry Carlyle Hickson was born on April 19, 1902 at Donaldsonville, Seminole Co., Georgia.3 He died on August 3, 1983 at Fort Lauderdale, Broward Co., Florida, at age 81.2 He FORT LAUDERDALE - Harry C. Hickson, the city's chief building inspector for 30 years and known for his outspoken independence, died Wednesday at Northridge Hospital. He was 81 and a resident of the city for more than 60 years. Hickson, hired as the chief building inspector in 1936, served in that post until his retirement in 1968, except for a two-year absence during World War II when he worked for private industry in Miami and West Palm Beach. He attempted briefly to stay on in the position after the city's mandatory retirement age of 65. A Donalsonville, Ga. native, Hickson made a name for himself in Fort Lauderdale during its formative years by speaking his mind. At one point, he was fired and rehired three times during a two-week period. He battled in court with a mayor over a dispute about plastic pipe and boldly issued a warrant against a prominent citizen's wife for violating a zoning ordinance. City commissioners subsequently rewrote the ordinance. "I never let the City Commission or city manager make a decision in this office," he said in a 1968 interview. "I didn't want to share the authority or responsibility of the office since I was responsible for it" At his own retirement luncheon, he said his middle initial "C" stood for "controversial." "I kept the politicians off my hip, and I think we built a pretty nice city," he said. Then City Manager Robert Bubier, while presenting a plaque to Hickson at the luncheon, said Hickson "has given me a lot of good advice in his own way." His independent nature also led him at one point to not say anything at all. He went 16 months without saying a word to one city manager he didn't like, even though the city manager was his boss. Hickson also found time to hold memberships in the Doric Masonic Lodge 140, F.&A.M., the Mahi Shrine Temple of Miami and the Keystone Chapter of Lauderdale Council Melita Commandry. He was a retired 50-year member and past president of the Carpenter's Union Local 1394. Hickson is survived by his wife, Marya; a son, Durwood Hickson of Nairobi, Kenya; a daughter, Fleurette Gistinelli of Delray Beach; a stepson, Alan Clark of Wilton Manors; stepdaughters Karen Jacob of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Sue Tutison of Ramona, Calif, and Kay Liska of Virginia; a brother, three sisters, several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. A Masonic funeral service is to be held this evening, though no time has been scheduled, at the Fairchild Funeral Home Oakland Park Chapel, 1801 E. Oakland Park Blvd. Calling hours are from 7-9 p.m. at the chapel. The final service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the chapel, with burial at Lauderdale Memorial Park. on August 5, 1983.2
