Janet Joan Riffe Janet Farley of Temple Street passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012, at the Bowers Hospice House. She was 75 years of age. The second of four children, Janet Joan Riffe was born on April 29th, 1936 at Stotesbury. Her parents were the late Hayward and Beulah Jennings Riffe. Janet spent her childhood on Harper Road. She attended Woodrow Wilson High School and graduated from Mt. Tabor Christian School in 1954. She has been a resident of Temple Street the past twenty years. Janet attended Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church. The simple things in life made Janet happy, sitting on the back porch and feeding her birds. In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Larry Farley in 2001, a grandson, Craig Dorsey II and a nephew, Rick Riffe. Janet leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Mike and Sue Dorsey of Chilhowie, VA, Clyde Dorsey, Sheri McGraw and Joannie Moore all of Beckley; she was the fond sister of Dane Riffe and his wife, Janet of Jumping Branch, Glenn Riffe and his wife, Shelia of Beckley, Barbara Pack and her husband, Jim of Pax; she was the doting "Maw Maw" of Joshua Dorsey, Anna and Alan Baumgarner, Lyndsey and Brandon Spence, Justin McGraw, Chelsi Boyd, Fallyn Moore, Jessica McCoy and Chris McKinney; the proud great grandmother of Tyler Dorsey, Garrett and Alex Spence; several nieces and nephews also survive. On Wednesday, January 25th, at 1:00 pm we will remember the life of Janet with a "Service of Remembrance" at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Roger Tolliver will be officiating. Janet will then be taken to the Oak Grove Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved Larry. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and James Morgan and Jeff Lacy. The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour. People have been so kind during Janet's illness. A special thanks to Bowers Hospice House, By Pass Pharmacy and Dr.'s Gary Poling and Scott Lostetter. He was 81 years of age. Mr. Daniel was born at the John Patton Farm Homeplace near Eccles, W.Va., on September 1, 1928. His parents were Lockie Patton Daniel and Sidney Preston Daniel of Surveyor. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Betty Lou Riffe Daniel. They met at Trap Hill High School in 1943. Additionally he is survived by two daughters, Betty Susanne Boyce and husband Lourn M. Boyce Jr. of Lester and Mary Louise Hansberry and husband Thomas J. Hansberry Jr. of Bridgeport. His four grandchildren are Lourn Maxwell Boyce III and his wife Cynthia Dawn Miller Boyce of Pineville; Benjamin Glen Daniel Boyce and his wife Melissa Ann Honaker Boyce of Lester; Matthew Bryan Hansberry and his wife Heather Jo Starkey Hansberry; and Megan Elaine Hansberry all of Bridgeport. His nine great-grandchildren are: Jacob Maxwell Boyce, Ashley Cailyn Boyce, Kelsey Allison Boyce, and Kylee Paige Boyce of Pineville; Jorgianna Mycaela Boyce, Bowdy Caleb Daniel Boyce, and Tansi Elisabette Boyce of Lester; Madison Lynn Hansberry, and Emma Kate Hansberry of Bridgeport. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his elder brothers Lewis Gratton Daniel and Quentin Sidney Daniel. Also deceased are his brothers-in-law Philip Thomas Riffe Sr. and Noel "Babe" Riffe. He is survived by brother-in-law Robert Louis Riffe and his wife Jean Shrewsbury Riffe. Sisters-in-law Paige Turner Riffe, Ann Daniel, Othella D. Massey, Genevieve D. Smith, and Lou Riffe Gates, and many beloved nieces and nephews as well. He graduated from Trap Hill High School in 1946, attending school there first grade through twelfth grade. He was a member of the THHS Football team from 9th through 12th grade and played on their Raleigh County Championship Football Team. He worked his way through college attending Beckley College and Concord College. He graduated from Marshall University with an A.B. Degree in History, a minor in Mathematics. He attained a Master's Degree from Marshall University and did post-master's work at Marshall University and West Virginia University acquiring Principal and Superintendent Certificates. He also taught Graduate level classes for West Virginia University and Marshall University. After forty-eight years with Raleigh County Schools he retired. During this time he taught at Acord Mountain Elementary, Mount View Elementary, Shiloh Elementary, Lester Junior High, Mark Twain High School, and Trap Hill High School. He coached at Mount View Elementary School, Lester Junior High School, Mark Twain High School, and Trap Hill High School. In administration he was Principal at Lester Junior High School, Assistant Principal at Sophia High School, Principal at Sophia High School and Stoco High School. Mr. Daniel was also the first principal of Independence High School. He served as the Raleigh County Adult Basic Education Director and Principal of Raleigh County Vocational Technical Center before his retirement in 1986. In the early 1950s he served as a member of the Lester Town Council. In 1952 when Lester was still considered a thriving town, Glen P. Daniel was elected Mayor of the Town of Lester for which he was recognized nationally as the youngest mayor in the United States at age 25. Mr. Daniel took great pride in serving as one of the original members of the Lake Stevens Tourist Development Authority, which had the responsibility of developing and building Lake Stephens. He was a past member of the American Red Cross Board of Directors, served as president of the Raleigh County Secondary Principal Association, and chairman of Raleigh County Athletic League. He attended the Grand Lodge at Elkins in 1931 at age three with his father who was a representative. Glen was a sixty-year member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, serving as District Deputy Grand Master for eight years. Many still call him "Coach Daniel." He was the Raleigh County Coach of the Year 1963 and coached Raleigh County Class A and AA Basketball and Football Championships. He was a Chambers Oil Company Board Member, Chairman of the Board of Southern States, and a member and Chairman of the Board of United States Agriculture Stabilization Committee. Glen Patton Daniel was a Methodist and loved God. He taught his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to trust in God and always forgive. He loved God, his family, and his country. He believed in friendship, love, and truth. He was a member of the Republican Party and served as a delegate to the State Republican Convention. He has voted in every election since he has been eligible to vote. Pallbearers will be Lourn M. Boyce Jr., Thomas J. Hansberry, L. Maxwell Boyce III, Benjamin G.D. Boyce, Matthew B. Hansberry, Jacob M. Boyce and Bowdy C.D. Boyce. Flowers are welcomed or please make a contribution to the Trap Hill High School Alumni Scholarship fund. Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday from 5 until 8 p.m. at Melton Mortuary. A memorial service will be conducted on Monday at 11 a.m. at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Dewey Lowe officiating. Final resting place will be at the Blue Ridge Memorial Garden Mausoleum 3. on April 24, 2010.3

Nila Marie Riffe Nila Marie Riffe Meadows, 76, passed away at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, VA on Nov. 6, 2010. She was born in Crab Orchard, WV on February 28, 1934. Her parents, Herbert and Corda Riffe predeceased her. She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, WV and of Marshall University in 1957 with a degree in elementary education. Nila is survived by her husband M. Gilven (Gil) Meadows, a childhood sweetheart; two sons Merlin Wayne Meadows and Stan Lee Meadows, both from the northern Virginia area; and two grandchildren, Amanda Lee and Bradley M. Meadows. At the time of her death she was residing in Stafford County. Other surviving family members include a brother, Mark Riffe and his wife Carolyn, and a sister, Elsie Pruett and her husband “coach” Bob Pruett. Additionally, her devoted and bereaved in-laws include Nola Meadows Turner, Berman & Tootsie Meadows, Bill (Farmer) & Betty Meadows, Fred & Nancy Meadows, David & Janice Meadows, and Vic & Sara Meadows. She is also survived by scores of nieces and nephews. Nephews serving as pall bearers include Tim Francis, Jay Meadows, Rocky Meadows, Jim Meadows, Ron Meadows, Lewis Turner, Alan Meadows, Mark Meadows and J.T. Meadows. Nila, a retired Fairfax County elementary school teacher, was active in community activities including various church positions. She was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church and the United Baptist Church in Annandale, VA. Perhaps her greatest satisfaction came from being a mother, grandmother and “favorite aunt”. Her family and many friends will greatly miss her. Friends may call at the Laurel Hill Funeral Home, 10127 Plank Road (Rt. 3), Spotsylvania, VA 22553, where her family will receive visitors on Tues., Nov. 9, from 6 – 8 pm. A celebration of life will be held at Chancellor Baptist Church on Wed. Nov. 10, at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends at the church beginning one hour before the service. Interment will follow immediately at Laurel Hill Memorial Park. He was a lifelong Raleigh County resident and had been with the Post Office Department since 1964. Canaday was active in community affairs, an usher and member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church and the Lions Club and served in the Navy during World War II. Born March 28, 1927 in Surveyor, he was a son of Mrs. Minnie McGhee Canaday Bowling, Crab Orchard, and the late Dempsey Canaday. Additional survivors include his wife, Eunice Riffe Canaday; two daughters, Drema and Diane, and a son, Lowell Jr., all at home; and a sister Mrs. Margaret Stone, Crab Orchard. A brother, Jack, died while in the armed services during World War II. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Crab Orchard Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Withers and the Rev. Shirley Donnelly in charge. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Okey Mills, W. P. Riffe Jr., Gene Elliott and Robert Deck and Larry Priddy. on January 13, 1974.3
