She was born in Riner, Va. on January 4, 1916, and she was known to many simply as Aunt Helen. Her husband, C. Hampton "Hamp" Palmer, died in 1966. She is survived by her sister, Katie Nolley Willard of Christiansburg; two nephews, Barry Willard and Garry Willard of Christiansburg; and four nieces, Lynn Ward of North Tazewell, Rita O'Rourke of Virginia Beach, Patricia Barker of Roanoke, and Barbara Lawson of Colorado Springs, Colo. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by an infant baby son, a sister, Juanita Nolley Turner of Roanoke, and a brother, Thomas Jefferson Nolley, Jr. of Christiansburg. After her husbands death, Mrs. Palmer took over the operation of a small grocery store founded by her husband, known as Hamps Superette, and managed it until her retirement in 1979. After her retirement she became involved in many activities at the Christiansburg Presbyterian Church where she was an active and life-long member until her health deteriorated. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no visitation and a graveside ceremony will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2006 at 10 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg. The family wishes to thank all the wonderful people who have shown so much love, kindness and compassion over the last two years of what was otherwise a wonderful, healthy, active and happy life. Relatives, friends and many others contributed greatly toward her well-being and happiness during her life. Helen will be sorely missed by all those whose lives she touched. She lived most of her life in Christiansburg. She married the late Samuel Wallace Willard on January 25, 1944 and was married to him until his death on March 28, 2003. In addition to her parents and husband of 59 years, she was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Nolley Palmer and Juanita Nolley Turner; and one brother, Thomas Jefferson Nolley. She is survived by twin sons, Barry Wallace Willard and Garry Thomas Willard, both of Christiansburg; and two daughters, Lynn Willard Ward of North Tazewell and Rita Willard O'Rourke of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 28, 2007 at Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at the Horne Funeral Home Chapel and will be conducted by the Rev. Sebert Rorrer. Nolley, on Nov. 9, 2005. She was born in Akron on March 23, 1913, and had a rich and full life. She and Paul built one of the first houses in Norton. They enjoyed their home, garden, neighbors, and three chihuahuas, Baby Doll, Poncho, and Pogo, for many years. Her parents, George and Sadie Ferris, and her two brothers, George and Joe, are long deceased. She is survived by her two nephews, Doug and Greg Ferris, and their families. She worked at the PPG Chemical in Barberton as a payroll manager for over 40 years. She frequently recounted stories of the affection she felt for her many friends and co-workers there. She had been in the care of Pleasant View Nursing Home since 1999. She would want to acknowledge the loving care of Missy Sweet and the other caring attendants there, and the kind administration of Mrs. Pam Boone. Hahn-Hostetler Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. She will be interred next to her husband at Greenlawn Memorial Park. A memorial service is planned at a future date. on November 12, 2005.2
