Howard Clifton "Tick" Lilly Howard Clifton Lilly - In August 1947, Howard Clifton Lilly became the first permanently assigned NACA engineering test pilot at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics' Muroc Flight Test Unit at what later became Edwards Air Force Base in California. During his assignment at Muroc, he flew both the XS-1 rocket research aircraft and the D-558-1 jet-powered research airplane. On 31 March 1948, Lilly became the third pilot to exceed the speed of sound in the XS-1. Lilly died on 3 May 1948 when the Douglas D-558-1 Skystreak he was flying crashed on takeoff. As the airplane climbed, somewhere within the jet engine's compressor section, a component failed. Sections of the compressor housing and blades cut through the engine casing and the fuselage skin. Some pieces cut the main fuel lines and severed the craft's control lines as well. Lilly had no control over the plane, which wallowed along for a few seconds before slipping into a left yaw and roll, then diving into the Rogers Dry Lakebed and exploding. He became the first NACA test pilot to be killed in the line of duty. At the time of his death, he had flown the Skystreak to a higher Mach number than it had previously reached-Mach 0.88 at 36,000 feet on 29 April 1948. Lilly had trained as a Naval aviator and joined the NACA at Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in Virginia (later, Langley Research Center) in October 1942. In May 1943 he was assigned to the Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio (today's Glenn Research Center), where he flew numerous airplanes in flight research on powerplant systems. He then transferred to Muroc (later, NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center). A native of West Virginia, Lilly was 31 at the time of his death. In honor of the NACA test pilot, the road leading to the Dryden Flight Research Center was named Lilly Avenue. The NACA was a predecessor of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which came into existence on 1 October 1958.7 He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.4 He was born on August 27, 1916 at Crow, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.8 He died on May 3, 1948 at Muroc Air Base (now Edwards Air Force Base), Kern Co., California, at age 31.8,4 He LILLY IS KILLED TESTING WORLD RECORD AIRSHIP. Young Beaver Pilot Meets Death As He Takes Off In Jet Plane. Howard Clifton "Tick Lilly, 30 year old test pilot from Beaver, was killed yesterday at Muroc airbase, Cal., while taking off in the Douglas Sky Streak, a single engine jet plane that holds the world's speed record. Lilly, the son of Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Lilly of Beaver, was until his death yesterday, one of the world's best know pilots. Word of Lilly's death was received by John Victory, secretary of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the top government agency for aviation research, who wired the Rev. B. C. Jennings of Mt. Tabor to ask that the pilot's family be informed. The Sky Streak is being used to study maneuvering problems at transonic speeds. The speed of sound, at sea level is roughly 760 miles an hour. Victory said he was told the plane rolled over and crashed as it was taking off on one of the test flights by Lilly, who had been flying the No. 2 Sky Streak since November. Lilly was rated the NACA's top jet test pilot. He flew a surplus Bellairacobra fighter in the national air races at Cleveland in 1946. He then was stationed at NACA's aircraft propulsion laboratory, near Cleveland. Flying the first of the two planes of the Sky Streak model last August, Lt. Col. Marion E. Carl of the Marine Corps put the world's speed record at 650 miles an hour. In December, 147, Aviation Week magazine revealed that Lilly was one of two pilots flying the army's highly secret experimental plane. When he flew his P-63 in the Thompson Trophy Race at the national Air Races in Cleveland in 1946, he placed ninth. He was supposed to have flown again in the air races last year, when he was transferred to Muroc, Cal., air base. Lilly learned to fly here in Beckley in 1940, under the Civilian Air Pilot Training Program being conducted at that time at the airport. Before he learned to fly, he was a junk Yard derby racer of jalopy automobiles, and a consistent winner at these races. In 1941, Lilly served as a navy pilot, joining the NACA as a test pilot in 1942. since that time he has been flying the fastest and most secret planes in the world, experimenting on passing the sonics barrier. "Tick" Lilly was a graduate of Shady Spring High School. He attended Concord and Beckley colleges. For a time, he was a pressman for the Beckley Post-Herald, and then a stereotyper for a Charleston newspaper. Before leaning to fly, he was an expert auto mechanic, and taught mechanics at Camp Raleigh, a CCC camp. Lilly was born in Raleigh county, and had lived in Beaver practically all of his life. besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Lilly, of Beaver, he is survived by one brother, Von Lilly of Beaver; and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Dunkley of Beckley, Mrs. Vella Mcmillian of Alderson, and Mrs. Claribel Bigelow of Washington, D.C. His body will be returned to Beaver. Details are incomplete. on May 4, 1948.9 He The body of Howard Clifton "Tick" Lilly, who was killed Monday while test piloting the Douglas Sky Streak jet plane at Muroc airbase, Cal., will be removed to Washington, D.C., Friday, for a full military burial. Lilly's parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Lilly, of Beaver, received a telephone call yesterday morning from John Victory of Washington, secretary of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, informing them of plans for Lilly's burial service. The NACA is the top government agency for aviation research. When he was killed, Lilly was one of the few pilots testing the No. 2 Sky Streak, studying problems at supersonic speeds. The speed of sound is roughly 760 miles per hour. Lilly's casket has already been sealed, and it will be flown from Muroc airbase to Washington. This information came from both Victory and Melvyn N. Gough, the top NACA official from Hampton, Va. The body will be accompanied across the country by his roommate, Mr. Beeler, who is also an NACA pilot. Funeral services will be held in the Arlington chapel in Arlington, Va., at 10 a.m. Friday. Full military burial will follow in Arlington National cemetery, where the body will be interred. Lilly's family will leave Thursday for the nation's capital and will remain there with the flier's sister, Mrs. Charles Bigelow. The honorary pallbearers, who will also leave Beckley Thursday, will be Howard Pettry, Paul Pettry, W. M. Houchins, Kenneth Lilly, Major Lilly, Steve Furrow, Jr., Ed Bartlett, William Brownlee, Jr., and James Prince. They will be joined in Washington by Col. Herbert Bragg of Beckley, who is now in New Jersey, and Herbert Meador of Norfolk, Va. Lilly is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Lilly of Beaver; one brother, Von Lilly of Beaver; and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Dunkley of Beckley, Mrs. Vella McMillion oF Alderson, and Mrs. Claribel Bigelow of Washington, D.C. The family had earlier planned to have the flier's body returned to the Calfee Funeral Home for serviceas here, but acceded to the wishes of the government aeronautical officials that rites be in Arlington. on May 5, 1948.4

Arvil Earl Pittman Jr. was buried at Canaday Cemetery, Glen White, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.1 He was born on May 3, 1936 at Glen Daniel, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.1 He died on July 14, 1949 at Blue Jay, Raleigh Co., West Virginia, at age 13.1,2 He GLEN WHITE YOUTH DROWNS IN CREEK AT SCOUT'S CAMP. Despite heroic efforts of his companions, 13 year old Orvil (should be Arvil) Pittman, Jr., of Glen White drowned yesterday while swimming in Big Beaver Creek at Camp Wilderness. Dr. Eva Teter of Beaver pronounced the youth dead at 2:30 p.m., after Beckley fireman had attempted to revive him with a resuscitator for more than two hours. The mishap occurred shortly before noon while Pittman and four other members of the boy scout troop 22 were swimming in the creek within the camp area. They had left the troop against orders. One of the boys said he rushed to Pittman's aid when he saw him go under for the first time. The boy said he grabbed Pittman by the hair and pulled him to the bank while the others screamed for further help from scout leaders. The water, witnesses said, was not above the boy's head. Scouts immediately applied artificial respiration. Members of the Beckley Fire Department, headed by Chief Bernard Martin, arrived on the scene within 20 minutes but efforts to revive the boy proved futile. Fellow scout members said they "couldn't understand how Pittman could have drowned." All of them agrees that he was a "good swimmer." Gus F. Walker, scout executive for the Appalacia Council, pointed out that the boys were swimming in direct violation of the rules of the camp."The rest of the troop were having lunch," Walker said, "and none of their supervisors knew they were in the water until they heard the scouts scream." Walker explained that the area in which the drowning occurred is used for boating purposes only. "The scouts normally swim in a special area and only when a supervisor is present," Walker added. besides his father, Orvil (should be Arvil), the boy's survivors include; his mother, Mrs. Virginia Welch Pittman Klines, of California, his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Crockett Pittman, of Glen White; the maternal grandparents, Mrs. B. C. Welch, of Akron, O., and Mrs. Inez Welch, of Beckley. The boy attended school at Glen White. on July 15, 1949.2
