His wife and other family members were at his bedside at home. He is survived by Charlene, his wife of 45 years, and seventeen nieces and nephews, fifteen great nieces and nephews and a special nephew, Richard Snodgrass of Richmond, VA. Bill, also known as “Fuzzy” and “Howard” to his friends, had a wry humor, a gentle disposition and a desire to help others. He attended Elkins High School and graduated as a machinist from the Western Maryland Railway Apprentice School in Elkins when the city was a busy railroad hub. He was especially proud of his service in the Navy during World War II. He served aboard the USS J.R.Y. Blakely, a destroyer escort in convoys across the Atlantic to Casablanca. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he loved animals. He also had a life-long passion for railroading. He had an extensive model railroad layout, with numerous lines of Western Maryland engines and cars. He and a close friend, Patrick Kiernan, spent countless hours together on model railroading. Bill’s interest in railroading also led him to work on the Western Maryland Railway. He began in the mid 1940s as a machinist at the Elkins yard, and when steam engines were replaced by diesel engines, he became a brakeman. He retired from the railway in the late 1960s. He also served as an Elkins City Policeman for several years in the early 1960s. Other jobs he held during periods of layoff from the railway included parts manager at the former Webb Ford Garage, a clerk at a former state liquor outlet, a machinist at Kelly Foundry and an electrician’s helper for Weese Electric. He was a life member of the American Legion, the National Rifle Association, the Western Maryland Railway Historical Society and the First United Methodist Church in Elkins. He and Charlene were married June 16, 1966 in Elkins. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Flora Snodgrass of Elkins, and a sister, Isabellie Gum also of Elkins. Visitation will be at the family home, 101 Westview Drive, Elkins,WV 26241 from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM Wednesday, December 7, 2011.
