Charles Frederick "Fred" Covey was buried at Covey Cemetery (also known as Lester Cemetery #2), Saxon Road, Surveyor, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.4 He was born on June 11, 1887 at Lester, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.6,4 He married Sadie Trump on December 8, 1904 at Raleigh Co., West Virginia.1,2 Charles Frederick "Fred" Covey died on December 14, 1934 at Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia, at age 47.7,4 He WELL KNOWN DEPUTY SHERIFF OF RALEIGH COUNTY KILLED FRIDAY BY LIVE WIRE ON CITY STREET - Deputy Sheriff C. Fred Covey, 47, was electrocuted here Friday afternoon when he touched a heavily charged wire a moment after it had been knocked loose from a power line pole by the impact of his automobile against the pole. The accident occurred on the Reservoir Road a short distance from the home of Covey's daughter, Mrs. Ross Stover, whom he was evidently going to visit when the mishap took place. The funeral will be at the home of his brother, T. H. Covey at the old Covey home place. Burial will be in the Covey Family Cemetery by Calfee Funeral Home. The accident was witnessed by several people. Fred Calloway, one of them, said Covey was driving along the road when at a point about 200 feet from Neville Street, his car suddenly swerved into the pole, hitting it with sufficient force to shake loose one of the poles, which broke and then fell to the ground. Covey left his machine and spoke for a moment with W. C. Mullins, whose wife was a step sister to the Deputy Sheriff, before returning to the wire. He arranged with Mullins to call a wrecking truck to remove the damaged machine. Then, after Mullins departure, he went toward the wire. Calloway, divining his intention shouted to him, "Don't touch it." But Covey seized the wire with his right hand. He was hurled to the ground. Ace Scott, who lives nearby, ran to him, grasped his clothing and pulled the body away. Covey was widely known in the county. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Covey and was born at Lester, June 11, 1887. He once served as a member of the Trap Hill District Board of Education and was appointed Deputy sheriff under the administration of M. J. Meadows in 1929. Reappointed by Sheriff C. C. Lewis. Survivors are his wife, Sadie and children, W. Guy Covey, teacher at Trap Hill High School; Sheldon Covey, a student at Concord College; Dale Covey, Madeline and George Covey of Glen Daniel and Mrs. Ross Stover of Beckley; brothers and sisters, Dr. W. C. Covey of Winding Gulf and Beckley; T. H. Covey of Glen Daniel; Dan Covey, resident manager of Mountaineer Hotel at Mount Hope; Mrs. I. T. Worley of Metalton; Mrs. W. H. Williams of Smith Creek, Ky; Mrs. Harry Brown of Lanark; Mrs. Leetie Covey, stepmother of Beckley Avenue, and stepsister, Mrs. W. C. Mullins of Reservoir Road. Six of Covey's fellow officers were pallbearers Tom Lewis, H. E. Brammer, Fulton Gunnoe, Jess Thompson, Emory J. Smith and Fred Cole. on December 16, 1934.4
