He sang with the Roanoke Cardinal Chorus of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. for several years and belonged to the Roanoke and American Rose Societies. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years after World War II. He was the son of the late Meryman and Maude Poff of Copper Hill. Surviving is his wife of 44 years, Arlene Graham Poff; two children, Rev. Michael D. Poff of Fort Worth, Texas, Marlene P. Sowder and husband Jeff C. Sowder of Roanoke; one granddaughter, Mary Catherine Sowder; two sisters-in-law, Dorsie Graham of Oakton and Neva Olson of Charlottesville; also a beloved aunt, Cassie C. Campbell of Vinton; one niece and one nephew. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. on July 13, 1995.²

Owens and Flora B. Owens Zeigler. Mr. Owens was a graduate of Perryville High School, Class of 1940. He was a civilian government employee at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, retiring in 1978 as a supervisory engineer in the Material Testing Directorate. Following his retirement from Aberdeen Proving Ground, Mr. Owens worked for several years with the circulation department of the Cecil Whig in Elkton, MD, where he performed a variety of duties peculiar to the Cecil Whig and other publications of the Chesapeake Publishing Corp. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving with the SEABEES in the South Pacific and taking part in the Marianas and Guam campaigns. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 135, Perryville, MD, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1400, member at large, SEABEE Veterans of America, Island X-5, Lancaster, PA, and the SEABEE Historical Foundation, Gulfport, MS. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Chapter No. 1522. Mr. Owens was preceded in death by his sister, Georgia Owens Arnold; brother, Walter James Owens; and son, Richard W. Owens. Mr. Owens is survived by his wife of 24 years, Evelyn B. He was employed 30+ years as Lt. Security Supervisor, at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, MD, and Edgewood Arsenal, Edgewood, MD. Mr. Owens educated himself in the field of electronics and enjoyed working with wood and working on automobiles. He was a life member of Jerry Skrivanek V.F.W. Post No. 8185, Port Deposit, MD. Mr. Owens is survived by his wife, Viola Margaret Bungori Owens, Perryville, MD. Mr. and Mrs. Owens have been married 59 years. Survivors also include his son, Walter James Owens, Jr, Perryville, MD; daughter, Cynthia May Bannon, Conowingo, MD; grandchildren, Timothy Alan Adams, Dawn Lynn Buyington, Joshua James Owens, and Danielle Nicole Owens; great-grandchildren, Dominic Thomas Adams, Timothy James Adams, Lucie Marie Owens, and Susie Ann Owens, and brother, Thomas E. Owens. In addition to his parents, Mr. Owens was preceded in death by his sister, Georgia O. Arnold. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, December 8, 2006 from 6-8 PM, at the Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., Perryville, MD. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 9, 2006, at the funeral home. Rev. Richard A. Moore of Rising Sun Church of the Nazarene, Colora, MD, will officiate. Interment will be in Principio Cemetery, Perryville, MD. on December 6, 2006.³
