He was born Dec. 22, 1921, in Broughton, the son of Wheeler and Roxie (Twigg) Irvin. He married Vera Rose Operchuck on Nov. 27, 1946 in Detroit; she survives in McLeansboro. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Marilyn Holt and husband Daniel of Abilene, Kan., Cathy Black of McLeansboro and Teresa Roy of Evansville, Ind; two sons, David Irvin and wife Sue of Sammammish, Wash., and Joel Irvin and wife Leigh of Farmington, Mo; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Claude, Max and Eugene Irvin; and sisters Freda English and Aileen Kane. Mr. Irvin loved farming, his dogs, loved being outdoors and all outdoor activities. He loved most of all being with his family. Joe was a member of the Walpole Tuscan Lodge 630 Masonic Lodge. He was also a past member of the McLeansboro VFW Post 1671. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Corps and was stationed in Guam. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, April 11, at Harre Funeral Home with the Revs. Mike Fields and Mark Byars officiating. Burial will be at Hickory Hill Cemetery in Walpole. Graveside military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 106, McLeansboro and the Military Honors Team of Marion. on April 9, 2014.2
