She was born in Floyd, Virginia on February 18, 1934 and was a devoted mother, grandmother and sister whose warmth and spirit will forever be cherished. Preceded in death by her parents, Noah Isaac and Mamie Grant Beckner, as well as her loving siblings-Colonel Beckner, Golden Beckner, Marvin Beckner, Pheroey Smith, Shelton Beckner and Joe Beckner. She is survived by her two devoted sons, Calvin Carr and his wife, Dianne, and Dale Carr and his wife, Sheila; her grandsons, Justin and Kevin Carr, and her four great-grandchildren, James, Jessica, Jordan, and Jacob Carr. She also leaves behind her brother, Gary Beckner and his wife, Gladys along with several nieces and nephews. Florence dedicated much of her life to her craft as a seamstress, having worked at Oak Hill Cap and Gown until her retirement at the age of 72. Her hands, skilled in the art of sewing, also nurtured life in the garden, where she found joy in growing tomatoes and cucumbers. The quiet strength and care she brought into the world will be profoundly missed by her loved ones. A graveside service will be held at Copper Hill Cemetery.5 She was born on February 18, 1934 at Franklin Co., Virginia.3,5 She married Glenn Lorman Carr, son of Posey Lee Carr and Lula Mable Holland, on October 6, 1951 at Copper Hill, Floyd Co., Virginia.1 As of October 6, 1951,her married name was Carr. She was an employee of Hardee's in Floyd. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Eddie Akers, her parents, four brothers and one sister. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Esker Lee and Janie Akers, Floyd; daughter and son-in-law, Arlene and Merrell Hedrick, Narrows; brother and sister-in-law, Roland Dean and Linda Sue Duncan, Floyd; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lorraine and Loman Smith, Riner, Loretta and Sonny Miller, Riner; grandchildren, Joana Shelor, Carolyn Akers, Glynda Woolums, Phillip Hedrick, Rebecca Hedrick Hartwell, Anthony Hedrick; six great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren, Kala Webb, Clark Myers; four step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 2003 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lawrence Nuckolls officiating. Interment will be in Jacksonville Cemetery.
