Bobby Donalthan "Bob" Whiteside1,2,3,4,5,6

M, b. December 8, 1928, d. February 11, 2018
Bobby Donalthan "Bob" Whiteside Bobby (Bob) Donalthan Whiteside (89) of Roanoke died on February 11, 2018. He was born on December 8, 1928, in Roanoke to the late Harry Woodrow Whiteside, Sr. and the late Ena Sue Williams Whiteside. Bob was also preceded in death by his brother Harry Woodrow Whiteside, Jr. After graduating from William Fleming High School in 1947 where he was a star athlete in football, basketball, and track, Bob served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He then continued his education at Roanoke College and began work as a surveyor for Norfolk and Western Railroad. It was during his college years that Bob began his career in dog training by working his Weimaraner dog between studies to become the highest scoring dog in the top level of A.K.C. dog obedience. While he received most of his dog training experience and knowledge from the late Don Garren, a dog training specialist for the U.S. Coast Guard, Bob traveled to and learned from skilled trainers of canine training facilities in England, Scotland Yard, and Italy. For over sixty years he shared his training abilities by offering classes designed to give people better communication skills with their canine companions. He instructed eight different police departments in the training of their dogs for attack work, tracking, building search and drug detection. For the Roanoke Kennel Club he served as President (twice), Obedience Chairman, and Delegate to the American Kennel Club. He was an American Kennel Club Dog Obedience Judge. In 1981, Bob married Carol Lucas, and in 1987 he retired after thirty-seven years with Norfolk Southern Railroad as engineering draftsman. Together they were devoted to their rat terriers, dog obedience classes, working their property, and trail riding with their mules. Although he enjoyed his horses, Bob felt a strong connection with mules often saying that he “felt sorry for the mule because they got a bad rap. America was built by mules and they never receive the credit they deserve, or any pleasure; they just work.” He is survived by his wife of thirty-six years, Carol Lucas Whiteside, sister-in-law Linda Lucas Steele (Roger), cousin Barbara Williams Carper (George), nieces, nephews, and many friends. Bob is missed by his devoted rat terrier companions: Tinker, Andy, July, Lucas, Bobbi, Wilson and Idgy; his mule, Judy; mammoth donkey, Jolene; and standard donkey, Jewels.4 He was born on December 8, 1928 at Roanoke, Virginia.3,4,5,6 He married Carol Snead Lucas, daughter of Hampton Algers Lucas and Rosalie Stuart "Featie" Stephens, on May 21, 1981 at Fincastle, Botetourt Co., Virginia.7,1,2,3,4 Bobby Donalthan "Bob" Whiteside died on February 11, 2018 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 89.4
