Jacquelyn Nance Tompkins Jacquelyn Carmack, Mar 1, 1926 - Sep 28, 2023. Jacquelyn Nance Tompkins Carmack of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at the age of 97 comforted by the love, respect, and admiration of her children, family, and friends, and by her abiding faith. In every regard, hers was a life well-lived. Jackie spent her life in service to her family, her church, and her community. All aspects of her service were characterized by her commitment, energy, caring, and ever-present smile. She lived her life with dignity, honor, and humility while constantly exhibiting a lively sense of humor which allowed her to laugh at herself as well as with others. Jackie always did her fair share and more, volunteering to help whenever the need arose and in so doing demonstrated exceptional leadership and organizational skills that allowed her to make a significant difference in the lives of others. As a member of Saint Mark's Lutheran Church for over 70 years, she served as President of Church Council, Finance Committee Chairman, Property Committee Chairman and Treasurer as well as numerous other leadership positions. Always dedicated to her community, she helped establish the Bradley Free Clinic and served for sixteen years on its Board of Directors. She also served as President of the Roanoke Arthritis Foundation and Treasurer of the Retired Officers Association of the Roanoke Valley in support of her husband's military career. During the 26 years in which she was a resident of the Brandon Oaks Retirement Community, she worked continuously to increase financial support for the Brandon Oaks Auxiliary through vigorous and creative management of the Treasure Trove, the Boutique, Octoberfest, and the Fashion Show Luncheon. While Jackie was dedicated to her church and community, it was her family to which she committed her heart and greatest efforts. She was President of the Parent Teachers' Association of the schools attended by her children in addition to serving as Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and church youth group leader. She encouraged, facilitated, and supported the academic, athletic, cultural, and social endeavors and activities of her children. Not only did she attend their events and activities, but she often sewed costumes, prepared food, or provided transportation for the whole team or group. Her many endeavors were recognized in 1988 when she was honored as the Roanoke Valley Mother of the Year in Community Affairs. Jackie was always interested in family genealogy and became a member of the General James Breckinridge Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Jackie was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Lt. Col. H. Ford Carmack (USMC Retired) and her parents, Calvin J. Tompkins and Gladys Nance Hutton. She is survived by her five children, Sue B. Baldwin (Robert) of Richmond, Va., Connie K. Carmack of Indian Lake, Pa., Patricia "Bunny" Hubard (Stebbins) of Roanoke, Va., Leigh Carmack Mundy (Stephens) of Crested Butte, Colo., and Dr. John F. Carmack (Ann) of Forest, Va; eleven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The family would like to express its sincere appreciation to the staff and administration of Brandon Oaks Retirement Community for their friendship and care over many years.
