Survivors include his wife, Ruth Moore Thurman, of the home; daughters, Billie Jo Birsch and husband, Jack of Virginia Beach, Va., and Peggy Thurman Walls of Burlington, N.C; a sister, Elinor Wicks of Summerville, S.C; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 1:20 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington. She is survived by her daughter, Elaine Thurman Belyea of Clifton; and three grandchildren, Ren Belyea Richardson of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and Byard Charles Belyea, III, and Edgar Barrett Belyea, both of Clifton. Leonard Robert Thurman was buried at Mill Creek Baptist Cemetery, 11475 U.S. Highway 11, Troutville, Botetourt Co., Virginia.2 His Social Security Number was 719-07-7137.5 He was born on July 16, 1915 at Virginia.1,6,5 He married Herma Pauline Mattox on December 24, 1936 at Roanoke, Virginia.2,6,7 Leonard Robert Thurman died on June 30, 1996 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 80.2,5 He THURMAN, Leonard Robert, ("Mr. T."), 80, of Buchanan, died Sunday, June 30, 1996, in Lewis Gale Hospital, Salem. He retired from the Signal Department of the Norfolk and Western Railway after 41 years of service. Mr. Thurman was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge #151, Buchanan for 50 years and was a longtime exhibitor and supporter of the American Saddlebred Horse Industry. He was preceded in death by his wife, Herma Mattox Thurman; his parents, Robert and Laura Sumner Thurman; brothers, Fred, Charles, Wilson, and Edward Thurman. Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Thurman Martin, Buchanan; granddaughters, Tricia Marie Tate and her husband, Mark Tate, Fincastle, and Julie Dawn Martin, Buchanan; one great-grandson, Brandon Scott Tate; two sisters; Cuba Murray, Roanoke, Frances Wilson, Brenham, Texas; a brother and sister-in-law, Emory and Pauline Thurman, Roanoke; three sisters-in-law, Irene Thurman, Dell Thurman, and Doris Thurman, all of Roanoke; and his special friends and members of the North Star Round Table in Buchanan. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 1996, at the Buchanan Baptist Church. The Rev. Mike Woody and the Rev. Leonard Southern will officiate. Interment will be at Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with I.O.O.F rites. Flowers will be appreciated and anyone wishing to make memorial contributions may do so to the Buchanan Rescue Squad and Fire Department or the American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Oakey's North Chapel, Peters Creek Rd on July 2, 1996.2
