Earl succumbed to an extended illness. He fought a good fight. Earl was born in Bomont, Clay County, WV on March 7, 1932. He was preceded in death by his parents, Olive Pearl and Earl Glenn McCune, Sr. and a brother, Allen Gene. As a child, Earl attended a one room school in Clay County. He later graduated from Charleston High School and attended Morris Harvey College (University of Charleston). Earl was employed by DuPont Plant in Belle WV for 25 years and held many jobs in the coal and chemical industry through the years. After moving to NC, he was employed several years by the State of NC Division of Environmental Management and retired as a branch manager for Trigon Engineering Consultants. Earl valued hard work. Earl was a Christian, ordained minister, and officiated at many family weddings and funerals. His family was his pride and joy. His children remember his lifelong devotion to their mother and how he would leave her little notes of affection. They are thankful to God for a wonderful father, a man of integrity, who not only worked hard to provide materially for his family but also filled their childhood with exciting bedtime stories, memorable vacations, stirring readings of poetry and literature, lively singing and playing of a variety of stringed instruments, a love of learning, and an unconditional love. A Christian who believed that God loved all people, he not only stood against racial injustice but also demonstrated to his children and grandchildren through his example to show compassion towards others. He especially loved entertaining his grandchildren with his banjo and also enjoyed jamming with friends and in former years performed with a Dixieland band, "Fidgety Feet". His children also remember his courage in promoting worker safety and health in the "Chemical Valley", testifying before a U.S. congressional sub-committee and helping to expose practices that resulted in a Kanawha Valley chemical plant modifying its drinking water intake from the polluted Kanawha River to a safer source.
