She had just been diagnosed with cancer Sept. 16. She was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Holden, Logan County, W. Va., to Dewey Hubert Thornton and Mattie Cova Vannatter. She was an only child. On March 13, 1942. She married James Hobart Ferrell in Logan, Logan County, W.Va. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple Dec. 14, 1967. They were married for 60 years. James preceded her in death July 19, 2002. Jewel worked at many jobs while her husband served in World War 1I. She worked in the Pentagon as a clerk-typist in Washington, D.C., and as a dental assistant in Wilmington, Del. After the war she and her husband moved to Lenore, W.Va., where she taught elementary school for several years before moving back to Newark, Del., and teaching there. She later went into nursing and worked as a licensed practical nurse in Wilmington, Del., and in Mexico, Mo. In 1981, she and her retired husband moved to Ashton. She worked in the hospitals of Ashton, St. Anthony, Rexburg and Blackfoot. After moving to Blackfoot in 1996, she retired from nursing. She was a convert to the LDS Church and held many positions. She was a Relief Society president, Young Women's president, and taught in many Primary classes. For years she cared for her aging mother and mother-in-law until their deaths. She converted her father to the church and he was baptized just 10 days before his death. She cared for her bedridden husband for years until his death and helped raise several of her grandchildren. She participated in the Citizens on Patrol program, was an emergency medical technician for three years in Ashton and was involved in the 4-H program for 10 years. She loved life and was very active. She devoted her life to the caring of her family. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by five children, (three daughters and twin sons) Juanita (Allan) Miller of Rexburg, S. Karen (Leon) Hoover of Mexico, Mo., D. Renee (Bryan) Winmill of Blackfoot, William H. (Kathie) Ferrell of Wilmington, Del., and James H. "Jim" Ferrell of Maryland; 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and a grandson. A graveside service held Friday, October 15, 2004 at the Pineview Cemetery in Ashton under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home in Blackfoot. on October 13, 2004.3

Interment will follow at Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher, W.Va. He was born January 10, 1933, at Lenore, W.Va., the son of the late John R. and Dixie Raines Ferris. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, JoAnn Ferris, brother Joe Ferris and an infant sister, Patricia Ferris. He was a Christian and was baptized at the Fellowship Baptist Church. A member of the United Mine Workers of America, he was a retired miner from Island Creek Coal Company. He is survived by daughters Patty A. Keesee of Huntington, Mary Thompson of Lenore and Glenda Baisden of Indian Trails, N.C; brothers John Ferris Jr. and Samuel Ferris, both of Lenore; sisters Sylvia Davis of Williamson, W.Va., Barbara Marcum of Black Log, Ky., Patsy Justice of North Carolina, Mary Staten of Chattaroy, W.Va., and Joan Jones of Lenore; four grandchildren, Alexandria Ferris Baisden, Jamie Suzanne Keiser, Denny Joe Sheppard and Julie Nichole Sheppard; and great-grandchildren, Jameson Sheppard, Benjamin Sheppard, Lukas Keiser and Tiffany Sheppard. Pall bearers will be family and friends. The family will receive friends from noon until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson is serving the family. on December 7, 2005.1

John is survived by two brothers, Sam Ferris, of Lenore, and Jeff Ferris of Laurel Creek; six sisters, Mattie Farmer, of Florida, Sylvia Davis, of Williamson, Barbara Marcum of Warfield, KY, Pat Justice of North Carolina, Mary Staten of Chattaroy, and Phyllis Joan Jones of Lenore, WV. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, November 25, 2008, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., at the mortuary. The Rev. G. W. Mounts will officiate. Burial will follow at the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, WV. Family members and friends will serve as pall-bearers. Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson is serving the Ferris family. on November 25, 2008.4
