     James William Bowles Jr. James William Bowles Jr., Oct 20, 1956 - May 18, 2024. James "Jimmy" W. Bowles, Jr., 67 of Salem passed away, Saturday, May 18, 2024. He is preceded in death by his parents James and Beatrice Bowles and sister, Doris Jean Jeannie Bowles. Jimmy leaves behind a son, Zachary W. Bowles; sister, Deborah Debbie Lucas, and brother, Edward Eddie Bowles. Jimmy worked at GE Salem for 25-plus years. Before that, he took much pride in working for Bowles Brothers Paving, a company his father started. Jimmy loved riding his motorcycle as well as working with wood. Much comfort is found in knowing he is no longer suffering in pain. W. “Dee” Detrick, Mechanicsville, Willa and Dan Angle, Rocky Mount; four grandsons, Michael Fry, Salem, Stephen Epperly, Archdale, N.C., Christopher Epperly, Roanoke, Andrew Angle, Rocky Mount; a sister, Madeline Thomas, Salem. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 7, 1994 at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel, Salem, with the Rev. Michael Slaughter officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on December 6, 1994.²

Young Poff apparently slipped and fell into a deep, swirling pool, known as the "Kettle Hole," on Bottom Creek. The Andrew Lewis High School senior was on fishing trip in the Bent Mountain area with three friends. Interment will be in Sherwood. Pallbearers be Mike Conner, Wilmer Byers, Mike Porter, Ralph Lancaster, Gary Poff and Bobby Hannah. Deputy Sheriff Everett E. Fry said the place the boy fell into is surrounded on three sides is surrounded on three sides by steep rock walls. The inside is a whirlpool about 30 feet deep, Fry said. on April 19, 1958.⁶

Barbara was a compassionate and gentle person. Known for being a devoted wife, mother, and Christian. Her family and faith were of great importance to her, she also loved all people and creatures without a second thought. Her caring compassion and love were continuously shown by words of encouragement or making donations to veteran homes and hospitals, hospice groups, as well as the Angels of Assisi. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Margaret Poff; loving husband of over fifty years, Jack Brookman; brothers, Larry and David Poff; as well as her sister, Judy Sisson. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Scott Brookman; cherished granddaughters, Madeline and Juliette Brookman; as well as many other family members and dear friends. She will be laid to rest at Sherwood Memorial Park. on April 18, 2021.⁵

     Jack Lloyd Brookman Jack Lloyd Brookman, 84, Salem, passed away on Wednesday, October 11, 2017. He was born June 21, 1933 in Montgomery County to the late Amos Herman Brookman and Margaret Pruett. He was a US Army veteran having served during the Korean Conflict and retired from General Electric after 36 years. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Barbara Brookman; son, Scott Brookman; and two grandchildren. She was a life time member of Bethel Baptist Church in Salem and she dedicated 15 years of service to Atlantic Mutual Insurance. He was employed by Elizabeth Arden as a tool and dye maker for 25 years. In 1992 he retired to spend quality time with his three loving daughters, grandchildren and extended family. He was a member of Ridgewood Baptist Church and is now with his Savior Jesus Christ. Daddy is preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve Renee Ferris Poff (Weestie); his parents, Arthur Clayton and Margaret Barnett Williams Poff; and siblings Larry Douglas Poff and Judy Poff Sisson. He is survived by his beloved girls, Rhonda Sue Poff, Deborah Ann Poff Bradt, and Kimberly Renee Poff Siemon and husband Craig Douglas Siemon. He is also survived by his three dear grandchildren, Michael Logan Bradt, Megan Renee Bradt, and Gennavieve Renee Siemon. Daddy is also survived by many members of the Poff family; his sister Barbara Poff Brookman and husband Jack; nephews, Scott Brookman and wife Claudia and family and Paul Douglas Sisson; nieces, Vicki Poff and husband Paul and family and Amy Byers and husband Stephen and family. Daddy rejoiced in the blessing of a life filled with many caring and loving extended family, cousins, and friends. He will especially be missed by his devoted cousins, Dodo, Bud, Melissa, and Miles. Daddy had many hobbies including enjoying the CB radio, having initiated the VA Dogwood Citizens Band Club in the 1980's; following major league baseball and his favorite team, the Atlanta Braves; caring for family's sweets pets (Mikey); gardening, landscaping, and Cooking!!! Thanksgiving, your favorite holiday, Daddy, we will ALL miss your pecan pies. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.
