Billie Wallingford Boothe PhD. was buried at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Courthouse Road, Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.9,6 His Social Security Number was 217-26-9127.10 He was born on November 23, 1925 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.5,6,10 He died on July 9, 2011 at Allentown, Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania, at age 85.6,10 He ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Billie Wallingford Boothe, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Kutztown University, 85, died unexpectedly at his home in Allentown, Pa. on Saturday, July 9, 2011. He was the namesake of Dr. Wallingford, the doctor credited with saving his mother's life during the influenza epidemic of 1918. Billie was born November 23, 1925 in Princeton, last of six children born to the late Jacob Isaac and Lava Poff Boothe. Forever proud of his West Virginia heritage and humble beginnings, Billie never forgot his roots. All his life, he relished sharing vivid memories of his family and childhood growing up in the Black Oak section of Low Gap. He was always ready to tell of an experience from his early life, followed by one of his most boisterous laughs. Admittedly proud that he never drove or owned an automobile, Billie's preferred mode of transportation his entire life was walking. This was instilled in him at a young age as he walked the six miles along the railroad tracks from Black Oak to Princeton for his early schooling. As he began his lifelong love of reading, he also began his lifelong love of walking. Quick to admit he was drafted, Billie returned to the family home after serving in the United States Navy during World War II. He again walked the six miles along the railroad tracks to Princeton to catch a bus to Athens where he graduated from Concord College (University) with a major in English and minor in American History. He later went on to earn his masters degree in English from West Virginia University and his doctorate in English from Vanderbilt University. Throughout his career, he taught at several universities including the University of Puerto Rico, Texas A&M, University of Tennessee, and Bethune-Cookman College. He ultimately began teaching at Kutzman University in 1966. He settled in neighboring Allentown, Pa. As when he was a young man, Billie was again walking to catch a bus. For 23 years, he walked daily across the city of Allentown to catch the bus to go to work at Kutztown University where he retired as head of the English Department in 1986. Billie was a unique man with a variety of accomplishments, talents and interests. He was a teacher, a scholar of history, an author, a renowned book critic, a collector of thousands of books including many first editions, a student of herbal remedies, a painter, and on the lighter side, an avid collector of his beloved ceramics "Happys and Smileys." Billie had become a familiar figure to many in Allentown who recognized him from his years of walking throughout the city. He was happy living in Allentown with easy access to New York City, where Billie could enjoy his great appreciation of the arts. He was a weekly regular at Broadway shows and operas. The last year of his life, when his health no longer permitted him to travel, Billie began watching shows and operas in his home, happily surrounded by his thousands of books and his "Happys" and "Smileys." Billie was preceded in death by his two brothers, Roslyn and Oka; and his three sisters, Captolia Burford, Eva Shupe and Lettie Boothe. He is survived by a host of nieces and nephews; and special friends, Alan and Jennifer Trumbauer of Easton, Pa. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 18, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home, 1507 N. Walker St., Princeton, W.Va. with the Reverend Larry Dyer officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service followed by interment at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. on July 16, 2011.6
