In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Harless R. Payne, in 1997. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Forest Drive, Annapolis. on January 4, 2006.2

Mr. Payne had lived in Ridgely for 16 years and was employed by the state of Maryland as a state trooper. He had served in the National Guard for six years. He attended Annapolis High School, was a police officer for the city of Annapolis for five years and was a Maryland State Trooper for 22 years. For 14 years, he worked with the K-9 Division, earning the K-9 Trooper of the Year Award. Mr. Payne was a member of Greensboro Baptist Church where he was the chairman of the ushers and the assistant chairman of the deacons. He was ordained a deacon of the church on Nov. 23, 1980, and remained an active deacon. Other survivors include his wife, Joan Spencer Payne; a son, Harless R. Payne II; a daughter, Dawn Marie Payne Martin of Ridgely; a sister, Betty J. Williams of Queenstown; five grandchildren, Kali Rebekah Payne, Sarah Mercedes Payne, Abigail Elizabeth Payne, Jessica Ann Martin and Jenna Ann Martin, all of Ridgely; a niece, Stephanie Palmatary of Wye Mills; and a nephew, L. Kenneth Williams Jr. of Wilmington, Del. Burial followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Annapolis. on December 11, 1996.4
