He was born in Irwin, Tenn. and resided in Pensacola for 31 years coming here from Roanoke, Va. He was retired from Armstrong World Industries. He was in the United States Army during World War I and received the Purple Heart Medal. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion.      Janet Lorraine Nelson Janet Lorraine Shelby, 73, of Pensacola, Florida passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2021.⁷ She was born on January 26, 1948 at Roanoke, Virginia.³ As of September, 1965,her married name was Shelby.² She married Terry Julian Shelby in September, 1965 at Escambia Co., Florida.^1,2 Janet Lorraine Nelson died on February 24, 2021 at Florida at age 73.⁷

     Waverly Allen Nelson Waverly (Wave) Nelson, 72, passed away after a brief illness on July 11, 2021. Born June 18, 1949 in Roanoke, VA to Jack and Nancy Yates Nelson. He served in the United States Army with two tours of duty in Vietnam. Waverly was a very colorful, kind, loving and caring person. He made everyone around him laugh and feel important. He was much loved and will be dearly missed. He is survived by a son, Jack Nelson (Pensacola) and daughter, Jill Farley (Fort Walton); three grandchildren Jazmyn, Kenna (Fort Walton), and Autumn (Pensacola); two great grandchildren, Nailah and LaComus (Fort Walton); sister, Jackie Roberts (Athens, GA); as well as nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Jack and Nancy Yates Nelson and sister, Janet Shelby. Funeral services will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS, with military honors.⁴ He was buried at Barrancas National Cemetery, Naval Air Station, 80 Hovey Road, Pensacola, Escambia Co., Florida.⁴ He was born on June 18, 1949 at Roanoke, Virginia.^3,4 He married Susan Gail Johnson on December 12, 1974 at Escambia Co., Florida.² Waverly Allen Nelson and Susan Gail Johnson were divorced on November 20, 1978 at Escambia Co., Florida.⁷ Waverly Allen Nelson married Jodie Daniell Curtis on November 8, 1996 at Santa Rosa Co., Florida.² Waverly Allen Nelson died on July 11, 2021 at Florida at age 72.⁴

     Betty Cooper married Leo Allen Yates Sr., son of Abner Chapel Yates and Lila Cam Sweeney.^1,2 Betty Cooper was buried at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery, 5315 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Knox Co., Tennessee.^1,2 She Betty C. Yates, 83, died on November 29, 2018 at St. Elizabeth's Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Baltimore, MD. She was born on April 27, 1935 in Greenville, TN to the late Rev. DB and Isabelle "Belle" Cooper. Mrs. Yates moved a lot growing up but always considered herself being from Tennessee. She attended Gallaudet College and went on to graduate from Hiwassee College with an AA Degree. Mrs. Yates met her husband while attending a Deaf-related conference at Gallaudet College in 1963. They married in 1965 and she moved to New Carrollton, MD to be with him. In 1978 they moved to Bowie, MD and the in 2002 to Fredericksburg, VA. She then spent a year at Brightview Assisted Living before moving to St. Elizabeth's. Mrs. Yates retired from the Washington Post newspaper in 1996. She was a member of Magothy UMC of the Deaf and attended there until she went into nursing care. She was a proud Methodist coming from a line of Methodist pastors. Mrs. Yates was a very devoted mother and wife. While living in Fredericksburg, VA she enjoyed playing cards with her deaf lady friends. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her sisters Doris Cooper Caldwell and Allie Anderson. Mrs. Yates is survived by her husband of 53 years, Leo Yates, Sr., her twin children Rev. Leo Yates, Jr. and Sarah Yates, her nephews; Joe Anderson, Rev. John Anderson, Steve Anderson, Chip Caldwell, and John Moore and a host of other family and friends. Visitation will be held at Highland Memorial Cemetery, 5315 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN, where interment will follow.¹ Her married name was Yates.¹ She was born on April 27, 1935 at Greenville, Greene Co., Tennessee.¹ She died on November 29, 2018 at Baltimore, Maryland, at age 83.¹

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lila and Abner Yates; brothers, Dock Yates and Roffe Yates. He is survived by his wife, Frances R. Yates of Vinton; sister, Nancy Nelson of Pensacola, Fla; brothers and sisters-in-law, Garland and Virginia Yates of Roanoke, Leo and Betty Yates of Fredricksburg, Lester and Blanche Yates of Roanoke and Jack and Evelyn Yates of Fredricksburg; stepson and wife, James and Carol Oliver Houston, Texas; granddaughters, Sarah and Elizabeth Oliver; brother-in-law and wife Brice and Betty Ridgway of Franklin County; 20 nieces and nephews and a number of great-nieces and nephews.      Lula Frances Ridgeway Yates, Frances Ridgeway, 79, of Vinton, passed away Sunday, December 28, 2014. She was a long time member of East Gate Church of the Nazarene. She was predeceased by her parents, Talmadge and Lucy Ridgeway; two siblings and grandson, Jonathan Oliver. Surviving family includes a son, James W Oliver and wife, Carole Hardin-Oliver; grandchildren, Sarah and Elizabeth Oliver; brother and sister-in-law, Brice and Bettye Ridgeway; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lester and Blanche Yates, Leo and Betty Yates, and Jack and Evelyn Yates; sister-in-law, Virginia Yates and many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.      Evelyn Ruby Black Evelyn Yates, Mar 14, 1937 - Apr 5, 2024. Evelyn Yates, 87, of Fredericksburg passed away on Friday, April 5, 2024 at her home. Evelyn was a loving mother and enjoyed gardening, scrapbooking, and spending time with family. She was a member of various deaf organizations and Salem Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Jack Yates; children Steve Yates and Kris Yates; grandchildren Emily Yates, Ashley Yates, and Megan Yates; and siblings Betty Kegley and Frances Johnson. She was preceded in death by her sons, John Yates and David Yates; and brother Arthur Black.² She was born on March 14, 1937 at Farmville, Prince Edward Co., Virginia.^1,3,2 She married Jack Harman Yates, son of Abner Chapel Yates and Lila Cam Sweeney, on November 14, 1959 at Richmond, Virginia.^1,2 As of November 14, 1959,her married name was Yates.¹ Evelyn Ruby Black died on April 5, 2024 at Fredericksburg, Virginia, at age 87.²

     David Wayne Yates David Wayne Yates, Jan 2, 1961 - Mar 20, 2020. David W. Yates, 59, of Fredericksburg passed away on Friday, March 20, 2020 at Mary Washington Hospital. David attended the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind for eight years then transferred to the Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington, D.C. David worked for the United States Postal Service and the Free Lance-Star until health issues forced him to retire early. He loved collecting stamps and baseball cards, playing pinball on his iPad and watching old shows made in the 1970s and 1980s. David especially enjoyed watching his favorite sports on television, which included the Redskins, UVA basketball, and the Boston Red Sox. Survivors include his parents, Jack and Evelyn Yates; brothers Steve Yates (Connie) of Woodbridge, and Kris Yates of Fredericksburg; Uncle Roger Kegley (Betty) of Richmond; nieces Emily, Ashley, Megan; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Yates, in 1981.³ He was born on January 2, 1961 at Roanoke, Virginia.^3,4 He died on March 20, 2020 at Fredericksburg, Virginia, at age 59.³

Yates, 18, of Woodbridge died Tuesday at Fairfax Hospital of injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack H. Yates of Woodbridge; three brothers, David, Steve and Kris Yates, all of Woodbridge; his grandparents, A.C. Yates of Roanoke and William and Ruby Black of Portsmouth. Burial will be in Dumfries Cemetery. on January 15, 1981.⁵

     John Powell Hale Died during the Civil War. In 1860 John P. Hale and wife were living in Long Branch, Franklin Co., Virginia with children William, 11, Arena, 8, Elizabeth, 5, and John P., 1. He was born on June 19, 1827 at Franklin Co., Virginia. He married Viola Ann "Viley" Martin, daughter of William Martin and Sarah "Sallie" Harris, on December 21, 1848 at Patrick Co., Virginia. John Powell Hale died in 1862.
