Death was attributed to a heart attack. A former area resident, he had spent 12 years in the service and was employed by General Motors. Survivors include his wife, Lola Long Rogers; three daughters, Patricia, Helen and Anita; a son, Eugene, all of Flint; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Rogers, Route 3, Church Hill; three sisters, Nellie Smith, Nannie Adkins and Vemie Rogers, all of Church Hill; a brother, Earl Rogers, Church Hill. Christian and Lula Mae Poff, on December 20, 1950 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.¹ Clifford Owens died in October, 2022 at New Jersey at age 91.³ He Clifford Owens was born January 5, 1931 on a farm in Knott County, Kentucky to Elisha Owens, a merchant and farmer and his wife Frances (née Sizemore) a school teacher. He was the younger brother of sisters Charlotte, Minerva, Juanita, and brothers Charles, Scott, Glenn and Joe. He attended Mountain Mission School in Grundy Virginia, Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Kentucky, received a B.A. from Rutgers University in New Jersey, M.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry from Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He worked for Campbell Soup Company and Gulf Oil before becoming an Associate Professor of Chemistry at the Camden Campus of Rutgers University from which he retired. He served in the United States Navy on the cruiser USS Des Moines (CA-134). He is survived by his wife Doris and many nieces and nephews. on October 23, 2022.³

     Evelyn Rosamond Garst Evelyn Garst Jones, 91, of Salem, Va., went to her heavenly home on Friday, December 22, 2023. Evelyn was born to the late Elise Wood Garst and Willis Christian Garst on, Saturday, June 25, 1932. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Jones; sisters, Betty Jean Harris, and Shirley Garst Maupin; brothers, Richard Calvin Garst, Willis “Bill” Christian Garst, Jr. Evelyn was a kind-hearted individual who possessed immense love and compassion for everyone she knew. She had a great sense of humor that she kept alive up until her last breath. However, her most important role in life was being a mother. Her love for her daughter was unwavering and surpassed everything else. Her devotion to her daughter’s success was proven many times over as she worked tirelessly as a single parent, making sure Debbie had everything she needed, including a college education. Additionally, Evelyn was a long-time member of Salem Baptist Church, where numerous friendships were made. She has spent the last 25 years living at Richfield Living at Ridgecrest where she enjoyed meeting new friends and enjoyed time spent. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Deborah Lyn Graham; sister-in-law, Cecilia D. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jeanette Hall Apgar, daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth A. and Todd L. Peters of Salem, granddaughter Lauren E. Peters of Richmond, grandson Thomas W. Peters of Salem, sister Ruth Irene Glock of Ellicott City, MD, sister-in-law Mildred Mills Apgar of Lafayette and Charlotte Richardson Apgar of Elliston as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews. Fred was a lifelong resident of Lafayette and member of Lafayette Gospel Church (formerly Lafayette UMC). He was a graduate of Shawsville High School, served 4 years in the Navy during the Korean War and married his sweetheart, Jan, in August of 52. His love for home, church and family were steadfast. Working in the family store, Sunset Service Center, was his best loved occupation. He enjoyed collecting lamps, feeding the birds and mowing.
