Visitors here from Montgomery tell of one of the most brutal murders ever enacted there, when Mrs. Alice Gray was killed by an explosion of dynamite. It is said that her husband ignited the fuse to the explosive, and threw it at the feet of the woman. Her body was mangled and she died instantly. According to the story, the husband, William Gray, while intoxicated, went to the woman's boarding house and, after being refused admittance, forced his way into the hallway, where the the crime was committed. The woman had left her husband some time ago, alleging that he mistreated her. The body was taken to near Avis, where the funeral was conducted this morning. Gray is under arrest in the
Montgomery jail. on July 11, 1916.¹

Born April 7, 1929, at Superior in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Steve and Victoria (Mullins) Kupner. She was a member of the North Narrows Tabernacle in Narrows, VA where her son, Paul is pastor. From an early age, Sybil was devoted to her Lord Jesus Christ. She loved the Word of God and in her later years was commonly found at her kitchen table, studying and reading the Bible through, many times over. Her desire in life, as she often stated was to "help someone and to be a light to others." Her heart's desire found its completion in the testimony she left behind. Because of her commitment, each of her eight children has followed in her footsteps, serving the Lord and continuing the legacy she left for them. Sybil was creative, enjoying sewing and growing lovely things. She treasured greenery and flowers and was truly gifted at making them prosper. She was a skilled seamstress as well and used this talent to sew clothing for her family from the time her children were young. Many of her children and grandchildren were blessed to have her handmade work at weddings or other occasions. A perfectionist when sewing, her garments were always beautifully done. Second only to God, Sybil loved her family. She unselfishly gave of her time and her talents, always thinking of others. Uncomplaining, loving, possessed of a ready smile, and generous of heart and spirit, she truly was the help and the light to others that she always wanted to be. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Rita Reed; a great-grandson, Ethan Atwell; brothers, Ralph Kupner, Robert Kupner, and James Kupner; sister, Carcy Kupner Carlson; and four infant siblings. She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Lafayette H. Terry; daughters Linda Robertson and husband Olen of Willowton, Bernice Combs of Princeton, and Barbara Kupner and husband Scottie of Princeton; sons Paul Terry and wife Imogene of Willowton, Wayne Terry and wife Janette of Princeton, Gerald Terry and wife Valerie of Elgood, and Vince Terry and wife Dottie of Princeton; son-in-law Bill Reed; one sister, Betty Hicks and husband Darrell of Bluefield; twenty grandchildren; and thirty great-grandchildren. Interment will follow at the Christie Family Cemetery in Willowton where Sybil will rest near her beloved daughter, Rita. on August 9, 2013.²

     Doris Gertrude Reed Doris Gertrude Reed, 92 of Dunbar, died at Ohio Valley Health Care in Parkersburg on December 27, 2018. She was born on November 8, 1926 on Lightner Avenue in Dunbar, and was the daughter of the late Cecil Homer and Mary Cecil Glass Reed. Doris graduated from Dunbar High School in 1946 and worked at several businesses in the greater Charleston area, retiring from Ames Department Store. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Dunbar and participated in the choir, she taught youth Sunday school classes and enjoyed travel trips with many of her friends from church. Doris was always ready with a smile and a cheerful greeting. She enjoyed reading, gardening, jigsaw puzzles and the birds on the feeder outside her windows. She grew up with a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins and was always ready for the next adventure. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Rosemary Lee Reed Hoffman; brother-in-law Jack S. Hoffman; and an infant sister. Doris is survived by her niece, Mary (Paul) Stuart of Yarmouth, Maine; nephew, David Reed Hoffman, of Concord, NC; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Cheryl Marie Hoffman, Melissa Anne Stuart, Daniel Reed Hoffman, Jeffrey Thomas Stuart, and David Reed Buckley. The family would like to thank the staff at Ohio Valley Health Care for their dedicated care of Doris over the past 4 years.      Rosemary Lee Reed Rosemary Lee Hoffman, 87 of Mineral Wells, WV died at the Ohio Valley Nursing Home on November 1, 2016. She was born in Dunbar, WV on September 11, 1929 and was the daughter of the late Cecil Homer and Mary Cecil Glass Reed. She graduated from Morris Harvey College in 1951 and had been a school teacher. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she had been very active in all aspects of the church including the Sew-In which met several times a year to sew and do different service projects. She had been a member of the International Order of Kings Daughters and Sons, P.E.O. of Parkersburg, the First United Methodist Women Group. She loved sewing, collecting glassware, china and rabbits. She kept family momentos and stories. She was a hockey fan, and loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Jack Hoffman, a daughter, Mary (Paul) Stuart of Yarmouth, Maine, a son, David Reed Hoffman of Concord, NC, her grandchildren, Melissa Anne Stuart, Jeffrey Tomas Stuart, Cheryl Marie Hoffman, David Reed Hoffman, and David Reed Buckley. Also surviving is her great grandchildren, Kaylee Marie and Jaxson William and a sister Doris G. Reed of Parkersburg.      Jack Sardyne Hoffman Jack Sardyne Hoffman, 88 of Mineral Wells, WV died at the Camden Clark Hospital on March 7, 2018. He was born June 30, 1929 in Middleport, OH and was the son of the late Frederick Raymond Hoffman and Frances Louise McClure Hoffman of Dunbar, WV. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Rosemary Lee Reed Hoffman in November 2016, his parents, his brother Robert Frederick Hoffman. Jack graduated in 1947 from Dunbar High School in Dunbar, WV and while there attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He served in the US Air Force as a radio operator and instructor and then attended University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana, prior to joining US Industrial Chemicals (later Quantum Chemical Corp.) in Tuscola, IL. From there Jack and Rosemary moved their family to Wilbraham, MA where Jack worked for Rexall Drug and Chemicals and then on to Cherry Hill, NJ to work for ARA Services (later ARAMARK) before returning to their home state of WV in 1981. He became a member of the First United Methodist Church, November 15, 1981 where he had been very active in all aspects of the church. He was an automobile racing enthusiast, a fan of the WV Mountaineers football and basketball teams, an experienced white water rafter, a competitive game and bridge player, a world traveler (Australia in 1989 and China in 2008), and most of all an exceptional story teller. We will miss his quick wit and his laugh. Survivors include his brother William David (Jean) Hoffman of Brunswick, GA; his daughter, Mary Frances (Paul) Stuart of Yarmouth, Maine, his son, David Reed Hoffman of Concord, NC, his grandchildren, Cheryl Marie Hoffman (Francis Nelson Nortz), Melissa Anne Stuart, Daniel Reed Hoffman, Jeffrey Thomas Stuart, and David Reed Buckley. Also surviving are his great grandchildren, Kaylie Marie Hoffman, Jaxson William Gaddis, Rylee Jade Nortz, and Francis’ son, Domnick Allen Nortz, a sister-in-law Doris G. Reed of Parkersburg, three nieces, a nephew and many longtime friends and neighbors.
