Harry Raymond Sheldon Harry "Ray" Sheldon, 95, of Olathe, Kansas passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, Kansas, with his four daughters by his side. Burial to follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Overland Park, Kansas. Ray was born December 18, 1925, in a small, rural home near Louisburg, Kansas, to Harry Olen and Virgie Evelene (Young) Sheldon. While attending Stilwell High School, he took off a year to work in order to save the family farm. He returned to school and graduated in 1944 then attended Kansas City Junior College to study accounting. It was during his senior year he met his future wife of 63 years. He married Onita Ruth Young on February 22, 1946, in Kansas City, Kansas; she passed away December 29, 2009. A member of the "Greatest Generation," Ray believed in serving his country and community. He was a United States veteran of two wars. He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II stationed in the Aleutian Islands. When he returned from this service, he joined the Reserves and was eventually called to fight in the Korean War as a member of the US Navy. He was stationed off the coast of Korea on the aircraft carrier USS Boxer and was proud to be a member of the "Bitter Birds," the nickname given to the squadron from the Olathe Naval Station. When his military career was finished, Ray focused on his proudest profession – farmer. Ray loved spending time on the farm with his family and enjoyed raising hogs, which he called his "steady paycheck." He also raised cattle and row crops on his picturesque land in southern Johnson County. An advocate for education, Ray attended Kansas City Jr. College to study accounting and later Olathe VoTech School to learn the trade of welding. He was also a skilled carpenter who spent countless hours building homes. As a lifelong area resident, Ray found countless ways to give back to the community. Ray was a member of the Spring Hill United Methodist Church where he had the distinctive title of Sunday School Superintendent for 10 years. He dedicated his time to the Hilltop School as a member of the school board and the boys and girls basketball coach as well as a referee at Hilltop Elementary School. Basketball was one of Ray's favorite hobbies. He loved playing and always had a basketball goal in his barn so he could shoot hoops in his limited downtime. He traveled across the state as a referee for high school boys basketball games. His other community service roles included president of the USD 230 Spring Hill school board and a member of the Johnson County Fair Board, VFW, and the Farm Service Agency. He was on the Ski Bees, a performance ski team with the Olathe Marine Club. Ray and Ruth were also active members of the Olathe Trail Riders where they served in numerous committees and leadership positions. In his leisure time, Ray enjoyed boating, water skiing, camping, collecting Allis-Chalmers tractors and toy tractors. Above all, Ray's favorite time was being with his family. He will be remembered for his positivity, generosity, and loving spirit. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ruth Sheldon, sister Hirrel Catherine, and great-granddaughter Evelyn JoAn Dilts. Ray is survived by his daughters: Linda (Loyd) Johnston, Buena Vista, Colorado; Mary Sheldon, Olathe, Kansas; Diane (David) Meyers, Olathe, Kansas; and Elaine (Kelly) Girton, Sabetha, Kansas. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.7 He was buried at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, 9501 West 159th Street, Overland Park, Johnson Co., Kansas.7,5 He was born on December 18, 1925 at Louisburg, Miami Co., Kansas.3,7,5 He married Onita Ruth Young on February 22, 1946 at Kansas City, Kansas.7,5,8 Harry Raymond Sheldon died on November 23, 2021 at Olathe, Johnson Co., Kansas, at age 95.7
