Vest, 73, of Glade Hill, passed away Monday, June 4, 2012. He was retired from the City of Roanoke, and he had also worked at Steel Services, Bernards Landing and Visha Vitermon. Mr. Vest was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ingram Vest, of Virginia; brothers, Herman Vest, of Georgia, Roy Vest, of Virginia; his sisters, Marie Tankersly, of West Virginia, Irene Wagger, of New Jersey, Geneva Dellis, of Alabama, and Maryann Tally, of Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bernice King Vest; daughters, Melinda Peverall and husband, David M., Faye Meador and Michael Lockhart, all of Boones Mill; grandchildren, Corie Barnette, Roanoke, John Foutz, Roanoke, Robert Smallwood, Boones Mill, Kristin Smith, Roanoke; great-grandchildren, Melinda Barnette, Ethan Smallwood, Jonathan Smallwood, and Kala Smallwood; a brother, Bill Vest, of California; and sister, Betty Day, of Ohio. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2012, at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Avenue. Pastor Eddie Hawks will officiate. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. on June 7, 2012.³

     James Herbert Vest James Herbert Vest, 61, of Beckley, WV passed away February 28, 2019 at home. He was born on March 4, 1957 in East Gulf, WV to the late Margaret Garten and Harry Vest. James had a great sense of humor and was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. James worked as a coal miner and was a member of the UMWA. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by three sisters, Cathy Arlene Vest, Patty Buchcannon, and Shirley Ann Graham. Those left to cherish his memory include his two daughters, April Castillo and Jamie Gwinn; two brothers, Harry Vest and Dale Vest; three sisters, Carol Workman, Linda Lewis, and Robin Blevins; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.³ He was born on March 4, 1957 at East Gulf, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.³ He died on February 28, 2019 at Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia, at age 61.³

Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 25, 1926, son of the late Louis and Edna Woodin Burke, he attended Pittsfield schools. He was a World War II Navy veteran. A roofer, Mr. Burke had been employed by Pittsfield Roofing Co. for more than 10 years, retiring several years ago because of ill health. He leaves his companion of 27 years, Ms. Joan A. Massey of Pittsfield; three sons, William J. Burke of East Hartford, Conn., and twins William and Joseph Massey, both of Pittsfield; two brothers, Louis and Almon Burke, both of Pittsfield; two children he helped raise, Mrs. Beverly McNeil and Mrs. Pamela J. Suites, both of Pittsfield; 16 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Another son, A Dennis Burke of Pittsfield, died June 1, 1989. The funeral will be conducted tomorrow at 9:30 at Dery Funeral Home by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor of St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. on October 4, 1994.³

Born on January 14, 1954, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Margaret Garten Vest Sr. A sister, Shirley Graham has preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memory, husband, Norman; daughter, Melissa Webb and son, Shawn Buchanan; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Linda Lewis, Harry Vest Jr., Dale Vest, Robin Blevins, Carol Miller and Jimmy Vest. She was preceded in death by a brother, R. L. Via Sr. and grandson, Bruce Eric Midkiff. Mrs. Vest is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara V. and Randolph G. Midkiff; a stepdaughter, Elvah V. Smith of Vinton; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Vickie M. and R. Lindsey Arnold of Roanoke; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Jeffrey S. and Susan W. Midkiff of Annandale; two great-granddaughters, Rebekah and Kaitlyn Arnold of Roanoke; a sister and brother-in-law, Jessie V. a nd Clarence E. Minnix of Etters, Pa; several special nieces and nephews. She was a member of Laurel Ridge Primitive Baptist Church in Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, April 12, 1994, 10 a.m. at the Lotz Salem Chapel with Elder Leonard Brammer officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park.
