Her husband Gerald was known as the “Sock Man” at the flea markets. She highly enjoyed trips to the Smoky Mountains. Mattie loved getting her hair done weekly. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Compton Wykle, daughter, Patricia Wykle Erskine, sisters, Mary Hedrick, Delores Boyce, Danese Saunders, Gay Dalton and Rosie Wickline and brothers, Theodore, Walter, Gordon, Bernie and James Elmore. Survivors include her sister, Betty Trent of Second Creek, WV, son in law, Robert Erskine of Ronceverte, WV, a host of nieces and nephews, and a very special friend, Alinda Perrine. The Monroe County, W.Va. native was born Feb. 13, 1916, the daughter of the late Charles W. and Ella Elmore Pomphrey. She was the wife of the late Brady C. Kinder. She was a former clerk and cashier at Bread Basket in South Point and a member of the South Point Church of Christ. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Libby and Frank Berry of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Milly and Cullen Chesser of Andrews, N.C; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Joe Kinder of Leesburg, Fla., Carl and Charlotte Kinder of Owensville and Bernard and Gilda Kinder of South Point; one sister, Cora Crowe of Princeton, W.Va; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband she also was preceded in death by one son, Jack Kinder, and two brothers, Tom and Grover Pomphrey. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Schneider-Slack Funeral home with Minister Mark Tonkery officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery. on September 23, 2001.2
