Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Dave Hatten; and two sisters, Mary Ruth Barnett and Grace Hamilton. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Shirley Brumfield Hatten; a son, John V. Hatten Jr. and his wife Brandy; a daughter, Nancy Hastings and her husband Richard, with whom he lived, all of Harrington; five grandchildren, John V. Hatten III, Courtland Hatten, Sheri, Michael, and Brandon Hastings; three sisters, Judy Evans and Susie Adktins, of West Virginia, and Goldie Baise, of Ohio; a host of nieces, nephews and friends; and his beloved dog, Lady. Services will be private, for the family only, to be 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2008 at the Fleischauer Funeral Home in Greenwood. Burial will be at St. Johnstown Cemetery in Greenwood. on December 27, 2008.2

Born January 16, 1931 in Raleigh County, WV he was the son of the late Fred Moody Canaday, Sr. and Damie Alice Webb Canaday. Before retirement Fred worked as a meter reader for Columbia Gas Company. He was a United States Air Force veteran and seved as a Staff Sergeant during the Korean War. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Leonard Canaday, and Don Lee Canaday; and one sister, Velma Hollyfield. He is survived by one sister, Lakie June Canaday Wood Clower of Princeton; and his niece and caretaker, Sherry Harold of Princeton and several additional nieces and nephews. In keeping with his wishes he will be cremated and there will be no services.2 He was born on January 16, 1931 at Raleigh Co., West Virginia.5,2 He married Doris Charlene Nichols on March 27, 1958 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.5 Frederick Moody "Fred" Canaday Jr. died on July 16, 2020 at Dunbar, Kanawha Co., West Virginia, at age 89.2

She was transferred to the Clarion O-I Plant in 1963 and remained in Clarion since then. However, Charlene traveled back to West Virginia many times and always thought of herself as a West Virginian. Charlene began on the assembly line at O-I, moved into the office and retired as traffic manager with over 30 years of service. She sold Dutchmaid clothing for many years and was a top salesperson, making many good friends along the way. Charlene was a member of the O-I Quarter Century Club, the O-I Golden Emblem Club and the First Presbyterian Church of Clarion, where she was instrumental in starting a book club. Charlene enjoyed traveling and visited many countries during her lifetime. Charlene was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Faye Ernestine McCoy; and her great-nephew, Ricky Filler. Charlene is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Vance Slike, and her grandchildren Cameron and Bailee Slike of Shippenville; her niece, Jo Ann Perry (Gentry) of Savannah, Ga; her great-niece, Cheryl Morrison; and great-nephew David Filler. Also surviving are many cousins, among them Shirley Studebaker and her husband Johnny of Mansfield, Ohio and Brenda Eastwood and her husband Jack of Poca, W.Va. She is also survived by Kevin Slike and Nancy and Ed Ganoe, good friends whose assistance to her in the last years of her life is immeasurable. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Goble Funeral Home & Crematory in Clarion on Sunday. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Katelyn Samuel of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Clarion Cemetery. on October 19, 2013.2
