     Major Gathercole was born on June 8, 1831 at Birmingham, Sullivan Co., England.² He married Martha E. Smith, daughter of Elias Smith and Jemima M. "Jane" DeWeese, on September 13, 1866 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,2 Major Gathercole died on February 16, 1910 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 78.² He In memory of my dear father, Major Gathercole, born June the 8th, 1831, at Birmingham, Suffolk Co., England; died in Floyd County, Va., Feb. 16, 1910 making his stay on earth 78 years, 8 months and 8 days. He came across the ocean in his youth and made this county his home. He was married to Martha Smith on the 13th of Sept. 1866, and to this union was born 5 children - 4 sons and one daughter. 3 children survive him, 2 sons and his wife preceded him. He was a soldier in the Civil War (Major Gathercole: Co. D, IN - Private, OUT- Private, 19th Infantry Regiment), and was a painter by trade, having followed it for many years with great success. He was a good husband, a kind father and a good neighbor, never was he heard to murmer in times of sickness or complain. He seemed perfectly satisfied with the Lord's will. He was not a member of any church, but bless the Lord O My Soul! for the great confidence I had in my father and the friends at his bedside when his last breath was near. How thankful we children ought to be to see that blessed smile that was on his dear face, makes me feel that our dear father has left this world of trouble and gone to mother and our little brothers in heaven; there to sing praise to our Lord and bless his Savior forever more. May we the three children left here, live true christians and when done in this world be handed down to our graves in as much pleasure and grace as our dear father, mother and little brothers were, is the prayer of the only daughter. Wade in 1893 at Floyd Co., Virginia.⁶ Nathan E. Gathercole died on May 17, 1916 at Court House District, Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 48.⁵

     John L. Gathercole was born circa 1869 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^2,3 He died on March 20, 1884 at Floyd Co., Virginia.³

     Sarah Louisa Gathercole was buried at Laurel Branch Cemetery (aka Goodykoontz Cemetery), Rt. 729 about one-half mile west of Laurel Branch Church of the Brethern, Floyd Co., Virginia.^5,4 Her married name was Clemons.⁶ She married John William Clemons.⁶ Sarah Louisa Gathercole was born on December 6, 1870 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^5,4 She died on August 22, 1938 at Court House District, Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 67.^5,4

     James S. Gathercole was buried at Lee Cemetery, Rt. 8, Tuggles Gap, Floyd Co., Virginia.⁴ He was born on August 14, 1876 at Virginia; His death certificate has a birth year of 1874.^5,4 He married Saloma A. “Liona” Hopkins on October 18, 1896 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^6,2 James S. Gathercole died on February 20, 1939 at Court House District, Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 62.⁴

     Saloma A. “Liona” Hopkins was born in January, 1869 at Patrick Co., Virginia.³ As of 1896,her married name was Gathercole.¹ She married James S. Gathercole, son of Major Gathercole and Martha E. Smith, on October 18, 1896 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,2 Saloma A. “Liona” Hopkins died on January 5, 1941 at Marion, Smyth Co., Virginia.⁴
