Walter Frederick "Fred" Campbell was buried at Eastlawn Cemetery, Tyrone, Blair Co., Pennsylvania.5 He was born on March 4, 1901 at Milesburg, Centre Co., Pennsylvania.2,8 He married Mildred Madalane Evans on April 8, 1925 at Altoona, Blair Co., Pennsylvania.3,4 Walter Frederick "Fred" Campbell died on April 13, 1993 at Fort Lauderdale, Broward Co., Florida, at age 92.8,4 He W. Fred Campbell, a musician who worked as personal secretary to legendary bandmaster John Philip Sousa died on Tuesday at his son's home in Fort Lauderdale. He was 92. In high school, Mr. Campbell won several typing awards and later used those skills and his musical talents with the flute, piccolo, baritone sax and clarinet to land a job with Sousa's Band. By that time, Sousa was a national treasure. The "March King" had won accolades worldwide for his stirring and originally American music and a repertoire that included The Stars and Stripes Forever, Semper Fidelis and The Washington Post. When he wasn't performing with the marching band, Mr. Campbell worked as Sousa's secretary. At one point, Sousa dictated his autobiography, Marching Along, to Mr. Campbell. The book was published in 1928. Mr. Campbell was born in Milesburg, Pa., to Mabel Orris and James W. Campbell. His parents were musicians that worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Tyrone. He was a professional musician at age 13, playing solo for the railroad's Tyrone Shop Band. When he wasn't playing music, Mr. Campbell was playing second base for the semipro railroad's shop team, part of an industrial baseball league. "When I think back, he had a wonderful life for a small town boy. He had a real talent that enabled him to get out of Tyrone," said his son, Fred E. Campbell. The talent that made him a professional at age 13 and helped him land a job with the Sousa Band later helped him win a job with Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians, one of the last giants of the Big Band era. Mr. Campbell performed with Waring's band over a 34-year period that included radio shows, recording sessions, movies, White House performances and a rave European tour. Waring's Pennsylvanians also became the first orchestra to have its own television show, starting in 1949. In 1957, Mr. Campbell retired and moved to Seminole on the Gulf Coast with his wife, Mildred Evans. Soon, however, he was again playing the flute or the piccolo this time for the Tampa Symphony Orchestra. He retired again in 1974. Five years later his wife died. They had been married 59 years. Eleven years ago Fred E. Campbell decided to take his father to the Sunrise Music Theatre for a concert of Sousa music. Beforehand, the younger Campbell persuaded the elder to call the rehearsing conductor and visit the set. He did, offering a number of tips about Sousa and his music that helped improve the concert. On concert night, Mr. Campbell was introduced as one of 16 surviving Sousa band members, thanked for his contributions to the production, then given a standing ovation. "Afterwards we couldn't get out of there," recalled Fred E. Campbell. "You'd have thought he was one of the Beatles." A funeral service and interment will be held in Tyrone, Pa. on April 16, 1993.4
