Altizer, on January 2, 1947 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.1,4,3 Wesley Raymon Basham died on December 28, 1953 at Bluefield, Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 32; Died in a railroad accident.2 He Fireman Scalded To Death, Two Others Hurt In Wreck Of N. & W. Freight Train. Locomotive Hits Switch, Derails Here. Engine, Tender And Two Cars Overturn; W. R. Basham Dead. A Norfolk and Western locomotive firem an was fatally burned by escaping steam yesterday in an early morning train wreck in the east Bluefield yards. W. R. Basham, 32, of Shawsville, Va„ died at St. Luke’s Hospital just before noon yesterday, about five hours after a freight engine, tender and two cars were derailed while passing over a switch. The big engine and the cars turned over on their sides. Also hospitalized was the engineer, A A. Munsey, 1421 Franklin St., Bluefield. He was being treated at Bluefield Sanitarium for burns about the hands, legs and face. Hospital officials described his condition as “satisfactory ” last night. Jumps From Engine. Brakeman D. C. Maggison of Roanoke was examined for a possible back injury suffered when he jumped from the engine before it overturned. He was later released. Railroad officials said the wreck was caused by a switch point derail, a device designed to stop oncoming trains from entering another track through a switch. A red signal still burning after the wreck indicated the switch was set to derail the locomotive. Other members of the train crew told reporters that, before being taken to the hospital. Basham said a green signal indicated the switch was open when the train passed through it. He was quoted by other crew members as saying the switch was thrown by remote control as the train passed over it. Railway officials pointed out however, that an interlocking safety device would have prevented the switch from being thrown while the train was passing over it. Spokesmen indicated yesterday that a full investigation of the accident would probably begin today. A preliminary investigation was made yesterday. Meanwhile, crews worked until late last night clearing the two tracks which were blocked by wrecked locomotive. The train was on a regular run from Bluefield to Radford with 29 coal and freight cars when the derailment occurred at 6:50 yesterday morning. The locomotive came to rest at a 45 degree angle, its left wheels buried in the soft earth and a steam pipe broke. on December 29, 1953.5
