Carmody and her husband, Paul, of Indianapolis, Ind; four step-grandchildren, Sandra Crenshaw Mitchell of Charlottesville, Charles C. Crenshaw of Charlottesville, Kim and Angie Carmody of Indianapolis, Ind; two step-great-grandchildren, Amanda and Tiffany Crenshaw of Charlottesville; two brothers, Page Otis Mann of Greensboro, N.C., and Aaron Lester Mann of Reno, Nev; one niece, Charlotte Gammon, and one nephew, Sterling Mann, both of Bradenton, Fla; one aunt, Mabel Berry, of Mechanicsville; a first cousin, Dan Tetlow, of Naples, Fla; and many special friends and acquaintances. At 12 years of age and after school hours, Clarke Davis Mann stepped into a Wichita, Kan., hotel, rented a page boy uniform and began career that spanned seven decades. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Air Force and d earned a commission through Officers Candidate School. Mr. Mann was the officer in charge of food service for the Carribean Wing and responsible for the in-flight service from West Palm Beach to Casablanca. He retired as a major after 21 years of service in the Air Force. Mr. Mann was a resident manager of the Chamberlain Hotel at Old Point Comfort, Fort Monroe, Va., from 1961 to 1964. He returned to Charlottesville at that time to become resident manager of the Monticello Hotel. He later purchased the Monticello and the surrounding block at Court Square. He sold the property in 1972 to be converted to condominiums. He was a former member of the Lions Club, Rotary Club and the Redland Club. He was Past Master of Widows' Sons Masonic Lodge #60, a member of Scottish Rite of Free Masonry #320, ACCA Temple Shrine Club, Keystone Royal Arch Chapter #58, Charlottesville Commandery #3, Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, and former vice president of the Piedmont Shrine Club. He was very dedicated to the cause of crippled children through the Shriners Club. Mr. Mann attended the University of Virginia from 1936 to 1940. There will be a private family service at Monticello Memory Gardens. on March 9, 1995.6

An Army brat, born in Greenville, S.C., she graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University, and made Richmond, her favorite city, her home, where she began an art teaching career at Brookland Middle School in Henrico County. Jo-Ann loved gardening and is well-known for her gifts of home-grown tomatoes and homemade blackberry jam. A talented artist, her paintings, ceramic works, pottery, and unique gargoyles are gifts her friends and family hold dear. Together, David and Jo-Ann shared a love of animals, rescuing many, and of nature. Her generosity will always be remembered by her family and friends. on December 15, 2004.3

     William Wayne "Bill" Martin After a brief illness, William Wayne (Bill) Martin, 65, of Narrows, attained the ultimate healing and went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, April 3, 2009. Bill was surrounded by family and friends and the love of God. A lifelong resident of Giles County, he was born on March 29, 1944 and was the son of the late William Deward and Dorothy Irene Evans Martin. Bill was a beloved husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather, caring brother and faithful friend. His love for his Lord and his family was evident in his daily life. His faithfulness to friends, unquestionable. Bill was a longstanding, faithful member of Faith Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church and was honored to serve as Deacon to his church family. He retired from Bland Correctional Center, where he served as a well-respected correctional officer for many years. Upon retirement, Bill enjoyed spoiling his precious grandchildren. He also enjoyed collecting NASCAR memorabilia. He will be remembered for his ready smile and heartfelt laughter. Bill is survived by his loving wife of nearly 43 years, Barbara Shepherd (Bobbie) Martin, of Narrows. He was the proud father of Christie Martin Sowers and her husband, Bennett Sowers, III, of Pearisburg, and Cherie Martin Fenne and her husband, William Fenne, of Aylett, Va. Cherishing their Papaw Bill's memory are seven grandchildren, Adrienne, Jordan, Cameron, and Taylor Sowers, and Katelynn, Billy, and Abby Fenne. Bill is also survived by his sister, Heida Ann Shepherd and husband, Eddie, of Tobaccoville, N. C; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Patty Shepherd, of Maryville, Tenn; and his in-laws, James and Jody Shepherd, of Narrows. Bill loved and was loved by his nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his church family and numerous friends.
