F. Sayre, Kanawha county coroner, Saturday termed "burns resulting from a suicide attempt" as the cause of the death of James E. Withrow, 23 year old chemical company shipping clerk. Burial will follow in Witcher Creek cemetery, with the Noble Long mortuary in charge of arrangements. Withrow died Saturday morning in a Charleston hospital, nearly 24 hours after being admitted suffering from burns over his entire body. Physicians had held little hope for his recovery as he was in critical condition when brought to the hospital. Withrow received his burns in an explosion and fire in the basement of Grant Fuller's restaurant at 818 MacCorkle avenue, where he stayed. Mr. Fuller said that Withrow reported for work Friday morning, but returned to his room shortly afterward. The man apparently stuffed doors and windows with rags and turned on the gas, Mr. Fuller said. The gas burner was still open when South Charleston firemen arrived. on June 11, 1939.6
