Surviving, in addition to the sons Earl and Howard, are: another son, William, with the Army in Phoenixville, Pa:; six daughters Mrs. Alice Moore, Spencer; Mrs. Nathaniel Nester, Washington, Pa; Mrs. Katherine Searfield and Mrs. Blanche Zeno, Akron, Ohio; Miss Virginia McCune, Clay and Mrs. Ada Davis, Elkhart; four sisters: Mrs. Flora O'Dell, Logan; Mrs. Lessie Starcher Charleston; Mrs. Ett Woody, Bomont and Mrs. Harriett Pyle, Pound, Va; and two brothers: Dewey Dodd, Charleston and John Dodd, in Indiana. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the residence at Clay by the Rev. M. E. Burns. Burial will be in Reed cemetery at Procious. The body will be removed from the Clay Funeral Home at Clay to the residence at 10 a.m. Wednesday. on May 28, 1952.

Haig of Baltimore, and Mrs. Lola Casto of Dry Branch; a stepson, James Woody of Bomont; two brothers, John and Dewey Dodd, both of Charleston; three sisters, Mrs. Lessie Taylor and Mrs. Ocie Starcher, both of Charleston, and Mrs. Florence O'Dell of London; 20 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Woody Cemetery at Bomont. on May 14, 1955.

5,7,10 He Amon [sic] Samples Dies Monday. Amon (Dick) Samples, 74, a native of Clay and more recently residing in Mason, died Monday at 11:45 p.m. in Holzer Medical Center. He once lived at Cedar Grove and Cross Lanes. Mr. Samples was a boiler engineer and was a charter member of the Mason First Baptist Church. He was born July 24, 1897, in Clay County, a son of John [sic] and Alice Samples. Survivors include the widow, Vanna Samples; two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Stephens, Fayetteville, N. C., and Mrs. Betty Pauley, Mason; sons Harold Samples, Cross Lanes, and Frank Samples, Nitro; 12 grandchildren and 10 brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. from First Baptist Church at Mason with the Rev. Harold Cunningham officiating. Burial will follow in the Samm's [sic] Cemetery, Clay County.
Note: His name was Amos Monroe "Dick" Samples, son of Abner Jehu Samples. He was originally buried in the Sams Cemetery in Clay Co. but was later moved to Kirkland Memorial Gardens in Mason Co. on December 1, 1971.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gay A. O'Dell; sons, Mark Andrew and Ronald Lee; and grandsons, David Paul Friend and Robert Gay Friend. Delphia is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry A. and Alice O'Dell of Bomont; daughters and sons-in-law, Alyce Faye and Criss Bragg of Ovapa, Mary Ellen and Howard Friend of Ravenswood, Jeannie and Jim Perdue of Ovapa, Susie and Charles Loomis of Given; 26 grandchildren (two deceased); 65 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dovie Starcher, Cindy and Julia, caregivers, for the loving and compassionate care given to our mother. Also, we are grateful to Dr. Leela Patel for the dedicated care of her. Burial followed in the Church of God Cemetery, Ovapa. on March 1, 2007.

8 She Virginia Samples Gandee Boggs, 92, of Clay, entered into rest Monday, May 15, 2017, in Clay Health Care, Big Otter. She was born October 10, 1924, in Procious, being the oldest daughter of Grover and Eva Crouse Samples. In addition to her parents, Virginia was also preceded in death by her first husband, Gerald "Bud" Gandee, and her only child, Robert "Wag" Gandee; and her second husband of 45 1/2 years, Hugh H. Boggs Jr; step-great-grandson, Tyler Richmond; and sister, Lenore (Ray) Hardman. Virginia was a 1941 graduate of Clay County High School and attended Glenville State College; she taught school a few years during World War II, but gave it up soon thereafter to become a wife, mother, homemaker, grandmother and great- grandmother. She was a member of the Liberty Advent Christian Church of Procious, having become a member in August 1941. She is survived by her three grandchildren, Karmin (Perry) Richmond, Tabitha (Michael "Mikey") Gandee Cox, both of Princeton, and Troy (Rachel) Gandee of North Charleston, S.C; great-granddaughter, Jenna Grace Gilmore; great-grandsons, Miller Cox and West Cox; sisters, Dixie (the late John) Hill of Rockwall, Texas, and Norma (the late Burnell) Johnson of Bessemer, Ala; step-son, Hugh Boggs III of Great Falls, Va; and step-daughter, Debra Saunders of Leesburg, Va. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, May 20, at Wilson-Shamblin-Smith Funeral Home, Clay, with Minister Dewey Tanner officiating. Burial will be in Clay Memorial Gardens, Clay.

6,4 She Lenore S. Hardman, 80, died early in the morning on Sunday, January 31, 2010, after a long illness. She was born Olivia Lenore Samples in Procious and was a daughter of the late Grover and Eva Samples. She graduated from Clay High School, Clay. In 1946 she married Ervin Ray Hardman after he returned from serving in the Navy during WWII. They were married for 58 years until his death in 2004. She was employed for thirty years in the Kanawha County school system, first as a cook at J. E. Robins Elementary School and later as supply and equipment manager at the school facility services office in Crede. She held a variety of leadership positions in the Kanawha County School Service Personnel Association, Greyhound Retirees Club, and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. More recently, she was also a member of the Red Hat Society and held a life membership in the PTA. She was a member of the Charleston First Church of the Nazarene, whose members supported her with much love and prayer and many cards during her long illness. She is survived by a daughter, Cidney Keith and her husband, John, and grandchildren, Lauren and David Keith of Erie, Pa. She is also survived by a son, Edward R. Hardman and his wife, Dianna, grandson Michael Hardman and his wife, Courtney, and two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Ashton, all of Winston Salem, N.C. She is also survived by three sisters, Virginia E. Boggs of Procious, Norma Johnson of Cordova, Tenn., and Dixie Hill and her husband, John, of Rockwall, Texas. Entombment will follow in the Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum, South Charleston. on February 4, 2010.

She was the daughter of the late Enos and Hazel Davis Samples. She was a member of Ansted Baptist Church, where she was a member of the church choir. She was a poll-worker for many years, a member of American Baptist Women, Senior Friends and a volunteer for Ansted Senior Nutrition Site. She loved quilting and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nile Clinton Nutter on Oct. 20, 1994; a son, Nile C. Nutter; two sisters, Agnes Stone and Kathleen Deusenberry; two brothers, Carlos Samples and Zane Samples; and a grandchild, Clifford Nutter. Survivors are a daughter, Carolyn S. Harrah of South Rockwood, Mich; a son, J. Kelley Nutter of Louisa, Ky; five sisters, Nina Mae Montileone and Anna Faye Schiavone, both of Florida, Dessie Marie Shamblin and Coral Jane Odenbaugh, both of Ohio, and Nancy Ruth Samples of Clay County; three brothers, Norman Samples of Delaware, Joseph Samples and Paul Samples of Clay County; five grandchildren, Julie Pool, Kelli Timmons, Keith Harrah, Jesse Nutter and Lincoln Nutter; five great-grandchildren, John Pool, Taylor Pool, Aaron Timmons, Amber Timmons and Ashley Harrah. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor. on September 28, 2002.

Samples, in 1971, and two brothers and one sister. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Stephens, Fayetteville, Ohio, and Mrs. Betty Pauley, Mason; two sons, Harold Samples, Cross Lanes, and Frank Samples, Marysville, Mich; two sisters, Vesta Thomas, Victor, and Cala Seaton, Charleston; one brother, Russell Paxton, Cross Lanes; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was a member and charter member of the Faith Baptist Church, Mason, and a charter member of First Southern Baptist Church, Pomeroy. Burial will follow in Kirkland Memorial Gardens. on April 6, 1987.

Visitation will be at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville from 7 to 9 tonight, July 18, 2007, and the funeral will be Thursday, July 19, 2007, at 3 p.m. in Jernigan-Warren chapel. The burial will follow at Cross Creek Cemetery. Hazel was born in West Virginia on May 7, 1919, to Amos and Vanna Samples. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Herman E. Stephens of Fayetteville, a World War II prisoner of war; her parents; and her brother, Harry Samples of Cross Lanes, W.Va. She is survived by two sons, Steve Stephens of Victoria, Texas, and Jerry Stephens of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters, Ann Stephens Harris of Fayetteville and Jeanne Jones of Raeford; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Frank Samples of Marysville, Mich; a sister, Betty Pauley of Mason, W.Va; and an uncle, Russell Paxton of Cross Lanes. She is also survived by first and second cousins too numerous to list and scattered throughout the United States. During her life, Hazel loved life and people to the fullest. Throughout many of her years, she volunteered much of her time and energy to various nonprofit agencies and charities, including the March of Dimes, veterans’ hospitals and numerous church activities. Hazel loved and was loved by many friends and continued to make friends until her last days. Above all, she loved and was proud of her family. on July 18, 2007.
