Dead on arrival at Raleigh General Hospital was Dewey Farley, a disabled veteran of World War II. Coal City Volunteer Fire Department Chief Von Bower said Farley, who was alone in his trailer, was burned almost beyond recognition. Bower was unable to give a definite cause for the fire but speculated that Farley was sitting in a chair and dropped a cigarette, touching off the fire that quickly spread throughout his mobile home. Bower said the mobile home and its contents, valued at around $17,000, were destroyed. The fire is being investigated by State Trooper R. D. Estepp. Born Dec 1, 1917 in Raleigh County, Farley was a son of the late Sullivan and Minnie Bower Farley. He lived most of his life in Raleigh County and attended the Coal City Baptist Church. Farley is survived by a half brother, Clarence Roy Bower of Coal City. The body is at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home.

Winton Guy Covey Jr. Winton Covey, 82, passed away on August 26, 2011 in San Francisco, Calif., following a long illness after having moved to the Bay Area in the fall of 2010 from his longtime home in West Virginia. Winton was born in his grandmother's log house in Glen Daniel, W.Va. in 1929. His parents were the late Winton Guy Covey and the late Madelene Allen Covey Thompson. During World War II, the family moved to Baltimore, Md., where Winton completed high school and earned his bachelor's degree at Johns Hopkins University. Serving as a tank commander in the NATO allied forces during the Korean War, he attained the rank of Captain and was awarded the Bronze Star. After returning to the U.S., Winton continued his academic career by completing his Ph.D. in Soil Science at Texas A&M and transitioned from research agronomist to Associate Professor of Meteorology at Cornell University in 1965. In 1968, Winton moved back to southern West Virginia, and settled in Lerona, just outside Athens, where he taught Natural Sciences at Concord College (now Concord University) until his retirement in 1994. A man of many interests—organic gardening, cave crawling, wine making, soup simmering, tree planting, map-reading, beekeeping, history, and genealogy—he was also a faculty sponsor of Concord's Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity and active in Lions Club, Ruritans, and the Mercer County Historical Society. His passion for mountain music evolved from banjo picking into folk dancing and square dance calling. But the endeavor in which he took the most pride was playwriting—three comedies in the style of Aristophanes and two Mummers plays that were performed locally. Winton is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Chihiro Ono Covey; daughter, Mandy Covey; and special daughter, Amy Barron, all of San Francisco. He was preceded in death by his son, David Bruce Covey. He is also survived by sister, Alice Jo and brother-in-law Edwin Wills of Charleston, W.Va; sister, Shirley Mae and brother-in-law Dominic Mele of Fallston, Md; brother, Jerry and sister-in-law Joan Malone Covey of Newcastle, Ind; brother-in-law Frank Ono of Seabrook, N.J; and many nephews and nieces. A small family gathering is planned to be held in West Virginia. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to be made in Winton Covey's memory to the Concord University Student Scholarship Fund or to the Salvation Army.7 He was born on February 3, 1929 at Glen Daniel, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.7,5,8 He married Mary Chihiro Ono circa 1952.1,3,7,9 Winton Guy Covey Jr. died on August 26, 2011 at San Francisco, San Francisco Co., California, at age 82.7,8

Mary Chihiro Ono was born on January 15, 1925 at Terminal Island, Los Angeles Co., California.3 As of circa 1952,her married name was Covey.2 She married Winton Guy Covey Jr., son of Winton Guy Covey Sr. and Madeline Clara "Maggie" Allen, circa 1952.4,1,2,3 Mary Chihiro Ono died on October 24, 2016 at San Francisco, San Francisco Co., California, at age 91.3 She SAN FRANCISCO--Despite her advanced age, the end came unexpectedly. Mary Covey faced her rapid demise with the same quiet resolve that had marked her life. Always the family mainstay, her passing leaves us at loose ends. Mary was born on Terminal Island, Los Angeles County, California, on January 15, 1925. Her parents, Iyomon and Nakae Ono, were immigrants from the fishing village of Tanami-mura in Wakayama-ken, Japan. Mary was older sister, who, along with older brother" Frank, was responsible for her younger sister and brothers while their parents were out working. She attended public school in Chula Vista and San Pedro until WWII forced the relocation of Japanese-Americans living on the West Coast. She graduated from high school in the Manzanar internment camp, where she also worked in the orphanage and the hospital, with the goal of becoming a medical research doctor. Toward the end of the war, Mary and her mother were in the vanguard of contract laborers who migrated to New Jersey to work in the Seabrook Farms frozen food packing plant. Later, thanks to the support of the American Friends Service Committee, she was accepted at Juniata College in western Pennsylvania, where she earned a Bachelors degree in Biology. During summer jobs working in the frozen food lab, Mary met a Johns Hopkins student, Winton Covey, who was to become her husband after college graduation. The young couple moved around the US following Wintons academic career to Texas, Washington state, Nebraska, upstate New York, and finally to Athens, West Virginia, where they made their home for 42 years. During that time, Mary worked in various capacities at Pipestem State Park, with the US Census Bureau, and as a library associate at Concord College. They moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2010. Over the years, Mary was active in the local chapter of the American Association of University Women and in helping Japanese college students adjust to American life. She enjoyed reading, quilting, watching the live NHK feed on her big satellite dish TV, giving demonstrations of traditional Japanese koto music, working jigsaw puzzles, and watching football and baseball in season (Go Giants!). Mary is predeceased by her parents, her dear husband Winton, their son David Bruce, sister Ellen Nishiyama, and brothers Roy and Ray Ono. She is survived by her older brother Frank Ono of Bridgeton, NJ, daughter Mandy Covey and beloved other daughter Amy Barron of San Francisco, in-laws Kumiko Ono, Ann Ono, Mariko Ono, Edwin and Alice Jo Wills, Jerry and Joan Covey, Dominic and Shirley Mele, and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Lucid right up to her final illness, Mary was still managing the situation, Dont grieve for me just take care of each other. We have our instructions. on November 13, 2016.3
