Henry Paxton, 21, who lives at the mouth of Witchers creek, is at the point of death in the Kanawha Valley hospital. His body is burned all over. Mr. Paxton, employed by Board & Duffield road contractors, was firing a boiler on a road on Witchers creek, a short distance from Belle, when a leak in a gas pipe line of the Pure Oil company caused an, explosion at 4 o'clock yesterday, afternoon. A terrific noise was heard for several miles. William Fletcher, another employee on the road job, was thrown over a fence, but was not seriously injured. Flames from the explosion enveloped Mr. Paxton, and his clothes caught fire. A human torch, he began running and tearing his clothes from his body as he ran. Fellow employees overtook him and wrapped him in their coats; and he was brought to the hospital here. Lying in his room at the Hospital this morning with death staring him in the face, and with the nurse giving him morphine to ease the pain that pulsated through his body, Mr. Paxton told the story as best he could. He couldn't remember much that happened after the explosion, he said. He couldn't see for the flames and smoke from his burning clothes. Mr. Paxton has a wife and two children on June 21, 1923.10 He died on June 29, 1923 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia, at age 21.1,2,6 He Harry Paxton, 21 years old, died late yesterday in the Kanawha Valley hospital of burns received in a gasoline explosion at Belle several days ago.
