He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and a past member of the church’s usher board. He was past president of the church’s Men’s Bible Class and was a member of the Methodist Men of the church. He also was a member of Mercer Masonic Lodge 160, the Royal Arch Masons and the Beni Kedem Shrine Temple. He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Letha Conner Martin; one son, James C. Martin Jr., of Bluefield; two brothers, A. P. Martin of Mullens and J. I. Martin of Virginia Beach, Va; one sister, Nellie McClure of Norfolk, Va; and one grandchild. Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by the Knights of Templar. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 5 to 9 p.m. on December 24, 1972.4

He was born in Princeton, Missouri, and had lived in Puyallup 25 years. He was a retired farmer. Surviving are his wife, Eva L; three sons, Ercel of Fort Scott; Kansas, Olin of Pacific City and Kenneth of Enumclaw; two daughters, Mrs. Harold Dildine of Puyallup and Mrs. Gene Dunlap of Riverview, California; a sister, Mrs. Hattie Stacy of Princeton; 19 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. on February 2, 1960.10
