     Eula Virginia Burnett On Monday, April 22, 2019, Eula Virginia Tread passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 94, at Sleepy Hollow Healthcare Center in Annandale, Virginia after a long battle with dementia. Eula was born on November 18, 1924 in Lawton, WV and moved to the Northern Virginia area in 1958. She was a former Fairfax County Food Services employee. She enjoyed shopping, bird watching, word search puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents: Palmer Frank and Matilda Alice Burnett; husband: James Lewis Tread; brothers: Raymond Burnett, Ralph Burnett, Alvey (Ray) Burnett, Roy Burnett; sister: Garnet Holliday; and grandchildren: Alexander Tread and Nicholas McLaughlin. She is survived by three sons: James F. Tread, Richard W. Tread (Linda Tread), Lewis E. Tread; four daughters: Virginia J. Kidd (Frank Kidd), Donna S. Chubb (Steve Chubb), Dora A. McLaughlin and Robin L. Laiti (Aaron Laiti); younger brother: Robert F. He is survived by one son, Richard J. Burk of Valparaiso, Fla., survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy B. and John R. Pennington of Lynchburg; sisters, Hazel Williams of Pearisburg and Mildred Burk of Princeton, W. Va; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, September 8, 2006 at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ronnie Mutter officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. Burk, 91, of Cassell’s Board and Care Facility, Princeton, formerly of Wickham Avenue, departed this life early Tuesday morning, March 3, 2009 to be united with her Lord and Savior. Born May 19, 1917, in Bluefield, she was the daughter of the late Gratton “Grat” Burk and Edith Hearn Burk.Having grown up in Bluefield, she lived their until 1944, when she moved to Princeton. Ms. Burk had worked for the Celanese Corporation in Narrows, Virginia for more than 41 years, retiring in 1982. While her health permitted, she was an active member of the Kee Street United Methodist Church in Princeton; she was also a member of Willing Workers Sunday School Class, the Wesleyan Service Guild and served with different committees within the Church. She loved her neighbors on Wickham Avenue, and her church family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Burk and Kyle Burk along with a sister, Helen Lilly. Survivors: Her last sibling, Hazel Williams of Troutville, Virginia; her dear friend and caregiver, Sue Lucas and her family, whom were loving, giving and caring for her, every day, for many years. On Thursday, March 5, 2009, at 1:00 p.m., we will celebrate the life of Ms. Mildred Burk from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Tom Hill officiating. Burial will follow in the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Bluefield. Family and friends will gather for a time of sharing on Wednesday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home or may leave online condolences at www.memorialfd.com. Men of the Kee Street United Methodist Church will serve as pallbearers. She leaves to cherish her memory her son and daughter-in-law, Leslie and Jean Williams, of Troutville; her daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Don Greenwood, of Roanoke; her grandchildren, Ursula and Sean Lee, Erich Stephens, Holly , Valerie, and Emily Williams, Brandon and Mary Susan Williams; her greatgrandchildren, Dalton and Wyatt Lee. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke, with Pastor Shahn Wilburn officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. on March 15, 2010.2

Burk of Lynchburg; four sisters, Janie Hicks of Milton, Fla., Margaret Coulter of Lindside, W.Va., Deleene Bingham of Springboro, Ohio, Sallie Dowdy of Christiansburg; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 1, 1997 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, Va., with the Rev. Freddrick L. Long and the Rev. Judith W. Long officiating, with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. on October 31, 1997.2

Mrs. Lowder-Bailey was a public schoolteacher, tennis and basketball coach, and an inspiring associate professor of English at Morris Harvey/University of Charleston. Born in Bluefield to George R. Lowder and Virginia C. Hearn Lowder, Mrs. Lowder-Bailey moved to Charleston in 1938 with her family. With the exception of her time away at universities for her education, Charleston has been her home ever since. She was educated at Bethany College, West Virginia University, Auburn University, and Morehead State University. She taught at Upper Witcher Grade School 1951-52; Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School 1952-59; and Charleston High School 1959-64. An associate professor of English at Morris Harvey College/University of Charleston from 1965-1994, she was voted Teacher of the Year for 1987-88. Thousands of Charleston residents will no doubt fondly remember the time they spent with her in classrooms and on athletic courts. Many of the English teachers in Kanawha County learned their grammar and how to teach grammar under her instruction. She was married to Dr. Frederick E. Bailey Jr., who predeceased her in 1991. A nationally respected senior chemical research scientist with Union Carbide/Dow, Dr. Bailey received acclaim for more than 60 U.S. patents for formulas he developed, among many other achievements. Mrs. Lowder-Bailey was the last survivor among her siblings: sister, Francis Lowder Morrison; and brothers, Daniel Lowder and Joseph Lowder. She is survived by her nephews, Kevin Lowder of St. Louis, Mo., and Craig Lowder of Mahopac, N.Y; brother-in-law, John W. Morrison III of Tazewell, Va; and many dear lifelong friends. She was an active member of the community, serving many organizations: the Municipal Beautification Commission, the Greater Kanawha Valley Scholarship Committee, Patchwork, Tennis, Inc., and the First Presbyterian Church. She generously supported many local and national charities, most notably, Kanawha Hospice Care, Inc. A memorial service will be held in her honor at the First Presbyterian Church, 16 Leon Sullivan Way, in Charleston on June 29, 2010, at 10 a.m. Her ashes will be interred in the columbarium at St. Matthews Episcopal Church on Norwood Road. on June 13, 2010.4

She attended South Charleston High School, Bowling Green University and Lindenwood College, St. Louis; was president of the Friends of Kirkwood Library; and former president of the St. Louis Writers Guild. She was a free-lance manuscript editor, a swimming instructor at Meramac Junior College and founded a Unitarian church in Pensacola, Fla. Surviving: husband, Joe F. Lowder; sons, Eric and Kevin Lowder, both of Kirkwood, Craig Lowder of New York; four grandchildren. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Kirkwood Unitarian Church.
