Born Sept. 12, 1913, at Dempsey, he was the son of the late Homer and Lillian Baughn Smith. Mr. Smith was a retired miner, retired nursing assistant from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Beckley, a World War II and Korean Army veteran, attended the Fayetteville Baptist Church and was a member of the A.F.G.E. He was past vice president and member of the Civilian Conservation Corps of Richwood and was a Red Cross volunteer. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Shockey Smith; a son, Keith A. Smith of Beckley; a brother, Calvin Smith of Oak Hill; three sisters, Helen Ball of Beckwith, Mildred Smith of Fayetteville, Route 2 and Anna Smith in Delaware, and one grandson. Burial will be in the Huse Memorial Park in Fayetteville. on July 12, 1988.5

McClung, in 1949 at Tokyo, Japan.4,1 Yoshiko "Yoshi" Hata died on March 8, 2013 at South Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia, at age 82.1,3,2 She Yoshiko Shockey, 82, of Nitro, passed away at Thomas Memorial Hospital on March 8, 2013. She was born in Oita, Japan, a daughter of the late Kohroku and Kikuye Hata. She met her husband, Paul, in 1946 and they were married in Tokyo, Japan, in 1949 and came to the USA in 1951. Yoshiko became an American citizen in 1956 and was very proud of her citizenship and never missed an election. Yoshiko finished high school in Oita, Japan, and graduated from Design and Fashion and Dressmaking School in Tokyo. She had worked for the Diamond Department Store in the bridal department. She also did private seamstress work for many prominient Charleston citizens. She was a member of Fairview UM Church, Kanawha Valley Christian Women's Association, Carbide Ladies Golf League, Carbide Bowling Leaague and the Nitro Senior and excercise group. Yoshiko was also preceded in death by her brother, Shoichi Hata. Mrs. Shockey is survived by her husband, Paul; son and wife, Paul Jr. and Pam Shockey of Cross Lanes; daughter and husband, Kay and Ray Little of Fairbanks, Alaska; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Takuko Hata of Osaka, Japan; and several nieces and nephews. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens. on March 10, 2013.1
