James Earl "Jim" York Jr. was buried at Westhampton Memorial Park, 10000 Patterson Avenue, Tuckahoe, Henrico Co., Virginia.4 His Social Security Number was 250-05-3585.8 He was born on November 4, 1917 at Greensboro, Guilford Co., North Carolina.3,5,8,6 He married Mary Beatrice Wright, daughter of Eldridge Leonard Wright and Flossie May Vest, on September 13, 1941 at Richmond, Virginia.1,2,3,4,9,7 James Earl "Jim" York Jr. died on December 13, 2009 at Henrico Co., Virginia, at age 92.8,9 He Volunteer James E. York Jr. dies at 92. In his late 80s, he drove seniors to medical appointments and to grocery stores. Once a week, he drove himself to William Fox Elementary School in Richmond to tutor students. And he spent numerous hours warmly welcoming patients and visitors at St. Mary's Hospital's main information desk. Mr. York died Sunday at age 92, at the Westminster Canterbury retirement community where he lived -- and volunteered -- for the past 14 years. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Westminster Canterbury, 1600 Westbrook Ave. in Richmond. A retired agricultural research chemist with a 46-year career at American Tobacco Co. and an Army Air Forces aviation cadet during World War II, Mr. York was widely known for his community volunteer efforts. "First, he took care of his wife; and when she was gone, he took care of everyone else," said Eliza Atkins, who knew Mr. York for 20 years at downtown's Second Presbyterian Church. After Mary Wright York, his wife of nearly 50 years, died in 1991, Mr. York continued to get season passes for local functions including the symphony, ballet and theater, and he would ask a child from church to accompany him. "It was great for these kids who otherwise wouldn't have a chance to go to all these places," Atkins said. For many years, Mr. York also read to children at Fox Elementary and helped them with school assignments. When he no longer could drive to Fox Elementary, he read to children at the day-care center for Westminster Canterbury, where he volunteered until last month. "He was always just such a gracious gentleman, soft-spoken but very, very knowledgeable. He was so calm and patient with helping people," said Trish Fawcett, director of volunteer services at St. Mary's, where Mr. York gave 23,932 hours of service in more than three decades. Other volunteer work included eight years of driving seniors under the auspices of the Shepherd's Center of Richmond and helping put together children's programs at the Science Museum of Virginia. "His goal was to stay involved with children," said son James E. York, III, of Arlington County. "He felt that the future belonged to them." In addition to his son, survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Y. Smith of Raleigh, N.C., and three grandchildren. on December 16, 2009.7
