Dr. Ezra L. Reed was buried at Logansport State Hospital Cemetery, Logansport, Cass Co., Indiana.5,6 He was born circa 1842 at Indiana.1,7 He married Sarah Jane Fitch on April 22, 1866 at Huntington Co., Indiana.1,2 Dr. Ezra L. Reed died on July 29, 1891 at Logansport, Cass Co., Indiana.5,6 He Word was received here last Thursday by L. R. Fitch of the death of doctor E. L. Reed at the insane hospital at Logansport on Tuesday night before. The information was accompanied by a typewritten statement of the evidence of doctor Joseph G. Rogers, the superintendent of the asylum, before the coroner at the inquest on Wednesday last. It appears that Reed was an incurable maniac, who was at times addicted to very violent and destructive spells and was placed in a ward along with the other inmates of that class. On the night of July 25th, while the attendants were taking their midnight lunch, an inmate of the same ward by the name of Kasch became violent and wrenching loose a bar which fastens the folding doors, began a murderous onslaught on the other occupants of the ward who were asleep in their beds. Before he was secured Reed and two or three other patients were badly beaten about the head and body, but the attending physician did not pronounce their injuries all that serious. Reed, however died on Tuesday night and a cornor's inquest and postmortem examination was held the next day, and Dr. Rogers states that it was disclosed that a badly diseased condition of the heart, which physicians state was the cause of his death and not the beating he received as above stated. By instructions from Mr. Fitch the remains were buried at the asylum. Dr. Reed was a brother of Billy Reed the dray-man in this place, and a brother-in-law of Mr. Fitch. He was sent to the asylum from this county December 24, 1889. Former he had formerly he lived and Huntington and Alan counties where he practiced medicine and in some respects was quite a noted character some years ago. on August 6, 1891.6
