Valentine Thrash was buried at Thrash Family Cemetery, on John Thrash land grant property, Thrash’s Mountain, Floyd Co., Virginia.1,5 He was born on November 30, 1805 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.1,3,5 He married Harriet Gray, daughter of Joseph Howard Gray Sr. and Anna "Annie" Custer, circa 1827.1 Valentine Thrash Land Grants - Valentine Thrash 300 acres, Grant #91, page 65 on August 31, 1840 at Floyd Co., Virginia.6 He Land Grants - 320 acres on waters of south fork of Roanoke River, Grant #91, page 658 on July 30, 1841 at Floyd Co., Virginia.6 He Land Grants - 162 acres on south fork of Roanoke River, Grant #107, page 568, 23 acres on waters of Roanoke River, Grant #107, page 567, 162 acres mostly in Floyd Co., on south fork of Roanoke River, Grant #107, page 568 on September 1, 1852 at Floyd Co., Virginia.6 He died on March 10, 1896 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 90.1,2,7,8,5 He A large number of Historical Society members and guests turned out on Saturday, March 8th for a meeting of the Floyd County Historical Society. Rebecca Weeks, president, presided. Guest speakers were Gladys Conner King and her daughter, Tammy King Simpson. They spoke about the Thrash family and the Thrash property near Copper Hill. Gladys said the Thrash house was built in the early 1800s and is one of the oldest homes in Floyd County. Prior to the large brick home, which is still standing, a log cabin was on the site. Many large Norwegian spruce trees are on the property.
Gladys King's husband is Howard Ward "Chip" King, Jr., and he is a 6th generation member of the Thrash family. Their daughter Tammy represents the 7th generation. Chip King's mother was Eloise Angle King and she was married to Howard Ward King, Sr., from the 5th generation of the Thrash family. Tammy grew up listening to stories about the Thrash family from her grandmother King and others in the family.
Tammy said that lots of people lived in that part of the county years ago. It is quite a distance from the town of Floyd, off on a side road. The Thrash property is a 40-minute drive from Floyd, but Tammy and Gladys think nothing of making the drive today. Years ago, Tammy's Grandmother King went to Floyd about once a year. Sugar Run Road cuts through the Thrash property, down the mountain to Shawsville. Today, the road has grown up but years ago people used the road regularly. Also, farmers drove their cattle down Sugar Run Road to Shawsville and put them on the train to market.
Prior to the time Floyd County became a county in 1831, the Thrash property was in Montgomery County. Today, the property is partly in Floyd County and partly in Montgomery County. The house is in Floyd County. During the 1950s, Tammy's grandmother and grandfather King bought the Thrash property and farmed it. Tammy's grandfather died in 1982 and her grandmother died in 2002.
Today, the Thrash property is owned and farmed by Tammy's parents and her aunt and uncle, Nancy and Will Rogers King. Their farm business is called "King Brothers' Farms" and they raise cattle and fruit. A third brother, Carson King, operates the fruit and vegetable market at Bent Mountain.
According to Gladys and Tammy, the Thrash family was originally from southern Germany. John Thrash was the Thrash settler to the Copper Hill area and they always heard that the Thrash family was attracted to the area because the landscape is similar to that of their native southern Germany. Although not on the Thrash property, a nearby mountain is known as "Thrash's Mountain."
John Thrash obtained the first land grant for the Thrash property in 1794 - a land grant signed by James Monroe for 2400 acres. John Thrash received other land grants in 1795 and 1799. A survey of the property was done in 1800.
John Thrash married Lydia Cole, daughter of John Cole, a Revolutionary War soldier and also an early settler to the area. On the 1850 census, John Thrash is listed as still alive. His name is not listed on the 1860 census, so he must have died sometime after the 1850 census.
John and Lydia Thrash had two sons, John Jr. and Valentine. John Jr. moved to Missouri and Valentine Thrash stayed on at the Thrash home place with his wife, Harriett Gray. Thrash descendants still live in the area but, as far as is known, no one by the surname of Thrash lives in the area today.
Valentine and Harriett Thrash had two daughters, Mary Ann and Mahala, and they and their families lived in the Copper Hill area. Mary Ann was married to William Sowder and Mahala was married to Jonathan Conner. Both men served in the Civil War. Jonathan Conner worked as a blacksmith during the war.
Tammy said the Thrash family "was very religious" and they attended the Primitive Baptist Church, as did many early settlers of the area. The Thrash family cemetery is on the Thrash property, not far from the Thrash house, near the Floyd-Montgomery County line. Some graves are unmarked but the following graves have been identified there by the Thrash family and Historical Society members: Priscilla A. Conner Manning - born 8/3/1854 and died 6/19/1931; Walter B. Manning - born 10/2/1892 and died 5/10/1927; William P. Manning - born 8/13/1856 and died 5/1906; Shelton Leak Conner - born 3/4/1858 and died 4/3/1937; Sallie B. Hall Conner - born 2/24/1859 and died 3/4/1956 (Sallie and Shelton Conner share the same grave marker); Lula E. Conner - born 1/22/1889 and died 11/3/1893; Valentine Thrash - born 11/30/1805 and died 3/10/1896; Harriett Thrash - (beside Valentine Thrash) - born about 1806; and Mahala Thrash (married Jonathan Conner and was a daughter of Harriett and Valentine Thrash).
Local historian and Historical Society member, Effie King Brown, has family connections to the Thrash family and, at one point, boarded for a short time at the Thrash house. She was 21 years old at the time and was staying there while she taught at Pine Forest School. The school is still standing and is about one mile from the Thrash house.
