Also surviving are her grandchildren, Larry Slade, Ray Pettrey and his wife Sabrina, Ronda and her husband Larry White of Church Hill, Tenn., Jim Via and his wife Angelica of Dublin, Ohio; her great-grandchildren, Kevin R. Pettrey of Arlington, Va., Cailey Slade of Chesapeake, Adam White and his wife Catherine of Hayes, Va., Lindsey White of Church Hill, Laura and Heather Newkirk of Orange, Texas, Jesse and Jeremy Via of Dublin, Ohio; her sister, Louise Thorn of Princeton, W.Va; and several nieces. A graveside service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, 521 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. on July 23, 2008.3

Survivors include three sisters, Willie Mae Presley and Elizabeth Ruth Randall, both of Chesapeake, and Margaret Louise Thorn of Princeton, W.Va; a niece, Gayla Slade and her husband, Gary, of Chesapeake; a nephew, Johnny Pettrey and his wife, Linda, also of Chesapeake; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, by the Rev. Charles Moseley. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today and at all other times at the residence. on July 19, 2001.2

Born July 14, 1931 at Green Valley, she was the daughter of the late James W. “Bill” Via & Ella LaFon Via. Margaret was educated in Mercer County, received her degree from Concord College in Public Administration, earned her master’s degree from WCOG. Margaret retired from the WV DHHR as Regional Supervisor for Child Support & Enforcement after many years of service. She loved her dogs and enjoyed her flower gardens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Carlyle Payton Thorn and a daughter Margaret Elaine Wiley McGinnis along with six siblings: Willie Mae, Betty, Wanda, Elaine, Tom & Jim. Survivors include her daughter and son in law; Mary Ann & David Linkous of Princeton, grandson & wife, John & Diana McGinnis of Bluefield; Granddaughter, Margaret McGinnis of Toledo OH, a great granddaughter and two great great grandchildren. Several Nieces and nephews and two very special nieces; Gayla Slade of Chesapeake VA & Nancy Carrico of Marion Va. and her faithful canine companion Daisy Ann. Graveside services will be held 2:00 P.M. Born November 27, 1926, at Princeton, he was the son of the late Charley M. and Junie Belle Scott Thorn. He was a graduate of Athens High School, he then entered World War II to serve with the United States Navy. He had served with the Princeton Police Department for more than 23 years, retiring as a Lieutenant on the force. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He served as Chief Deputy of Mercer County under the late Sheriff Earl Kendrick for four years. He was appointed and served a two year term as a Magistrate in Mercer County, he was head of the Security Department for Stone and Thomas Department Store for many years. He then was employed by Mercer County Bank (One Valley Bank) of Princeton. He was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sue McGinnis, along with a brother, Charlie Thorn and a sister, Mabel “Dutch” White. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Margaret Louise Via Thorn; one daughter, Mary Ann Walter and husband John of Princeton; two grandchildren, John H. McGinnis IV and wife Diana of Bluefield, Va. and Margaret Haste and husband Ray of Fla; four sisters, Crystal Frazier of Princeton, Edith Hypes of Roanoke, Va., Alice Skeens of Toledo, Ohio, and Elaine Butler of Inland Creek; two brothers, Joe Thorn and wife Jackie and Marvin Thorn and wife Carol, all of Princeton. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Rev. Kenneth Hilling officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Princeton. on April 18, 2000.6

Surviving: his wife, Mrs. Ruth Nalle: two sons, William Richard and Charles David, both at home; a brother, James Richard of Chesapeake; the maternal grandmother, Mrs. J. R. Walton of Charleston and the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Nalle, of Akron, O. The funeral Wednesday at 2 p.m. will be in the Dickinson Methodist church, the Rev. Mr. Chapman officiating. The body will remain at the mortuary until one hour before the service. on March 28, 1955.4

He will be sadly missed by his parents and his extended family. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Lynwood Trump.
