He was a native of Roanoke, Va. having spent most of his career as minister of music at various churches in Virginia including Vinton, Roanoke, Richmond, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. He was also a business owner in the Norfolk area. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 10, 2003 at Rich & Thompson Chapel. Rev. R. E. L. Moser, Methodist Minister and Rev. Laughton Corr, of Richmond, Va., will officiate. Interment to follow in Aluminize Memorial Park Mausoleum. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Moore Thurman, of the home; daughters, Billie Jo Birsch and husband, Jack of Virginia Beach, Va., and Peggy Thurman Walls of Burlington, N.C; a sister, Elinor Wicks of Summerville, S.C; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 1:20 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 1996, at the Buchanan Baptist Church. The Rev. Mike Woody and the Rev. Leonard Southern will officiate.
